About Us
Fine Building Stone for Exterior and Interior Use | Architectural Stone Countertops and Fireplaces | Proudly Mined in the Ozarks Since 1888
In 1884, during the construction of the Kansas City, Clinton, Springfield railroad, blasting uncovered a major limestone deposit around the town of Phenix, Missouri. For twenty years, the quarry supplied cut stone and lime, but a marble contractor who came across the stone recognized that the material was of an extremely high grade, and could even take a polish. To take full advantage of the material's commercial potential, the Phenix Stone and Lime Company became the Phenix Marble Company. From 1905 until the Great Depression, Phenix supplied marble to fine buildings in every state and in Canada, shipping more than 250,000 cubic feet annually. Though Phenix is now a ghost town, the quarry remains, and this storied material is once again available for your residential or commercial project.
In 2015, more than 100 years after the quarry was opened, and around 75 years after its heyday as a marble producer, Phenix Marble Company is once again quarrying new material and processing it into slab. We are able to supply limestone cut to order and polished marble slabs. Given notice, we are also happy to give tours of the quarry and the remains of the company town to interested individuals and groups.
