As an original Maasai Lazaro Ole Ngijuka came to understand that his people, the pastoralist communities of Ngorongoro Maasai, appreciate their livestock and their traditions; however they lack the knowledge to appreciate the value of educating their children. Pastoralists therefore, deprive their children of attending school, especially if the child is a girl. Boys are also unable to attend school due to their responsibility of having to attend to the herd during the day.. Lazaro Ole Ngijuka also learnt from a young age that the girls are being sold to prospective husbands in order for their families to get the usual bride price of cattle or to get money for alcohol. A girl in a pastoralist community can earn much money for her family in this way and is usually married off against her will at a very young age. The Government do not follow up on who is and who is not attending school in this area, and so the child continues to pass on the ignorance of the parent’s to the importance of education, to the next generation. They continue the lifecycle of looking after their herds, living a subsistence lifestyle and remaining uneducated as the world around them continues to progress further and further away from their understanding.
