We selected Jay Caffey/JMC Builders to build a custom mid-century home in Long Beach Ca after interviewing several highly respected contractors in the community. Our project involved the removal of an existing house and the construction of a custom mid-century modern home. The entire process, from six months of architectural design throughout 18 months of construction, was a positive experience for us. Jay provided detailed timelines, budgets, weekly updates and expenditure detail that fit our needs to manage the project from another state. The house construction and workmanship have met our quality and precision expectations. The staging of the craft sub-contractors were managed well and work quality top-notch. Due to Jay's knowledge and experience, the day-to-day decision-making and project management were effectively managed. As importantly, he selected sub-contractors within the community who he worked well with and understood their capabilities in regard to this project. Our weekly updates were effective - we knew where the house construction was at all times and decisions that were needed from us (long distance) were presented with facts, potential impact on other aspects of the project and with options.

Principal, Jay Caffey, is an experienced contractor with a great eye, a sure hand, a no-nonsense approach to his schedule, and he employs top-notch sub-contractors. We've hired him for two major remodels (kitchen and backyard) and have never regretted it. The work holds up, the designs were timeless, and the materials of high quality. Both projects were completed on time and on budget. Jay's bid process is meticulous, so there were no surprises. He was very good at keeping us on task and foreseeing any delays so he could work around them. We contracted with JMC Builders to add a Master Bedroom & Garage to our 1920's Spanish style bungalow. It was a great experience. Jay was honest about what we might find when "opening up" an older home. Jay and his workers communicated clearly during every aspects of our project so that things moved ahead quickly and efficiently. When issues needed to be addressed Jay strove to provide the best option not just for our home, but also for our bottom line. JMC worked hand in hand with our Architect (Interstices, Jon Glasgow) so that all the "little details" that made a new add on an old home feel natural and not after thoughts were addressed before hand and not left to chance. Construction is never easy, especially when you are living in the home, but we deeply appreciated all the time and effort JMC Builders put into our project. We would definitely use them again and our pleased to be able to recommend them to friends, family and neighbors.

We hired JMC to remodel our 30's Spanish home. The project involved removing years of previous renovations, preserving all of the original details that still existed and then trying to put the house back together in a way that spoke to the history of the home, but, prepared it for modern life. The process was a bit involved, but, in the end the outcome was better than we could ever have imagined and we are proud to say that Jay from JMC, came through with spectacular results. Throughout the process we felt that he was our advocate and was really concerned about both the quality of the finished product while constantly keeping an eye on the costs. He was an invaluable resource in finding vendors for both obscure antique hardware and modern finishes. He also worked with both our architect and designer to find the best possible solutions which balanced costs with esthetics. Jay Caffey has built some of the most amazing homes around. He has a great attention to every detail and comes up with some creative ways to make a better product in the end. This is the 2nd project we have completed in our home with JMC builders. After the 1st project - a master bath addition/2nd floor renovation that we lived through, I knew there was no one else who would renovate our 1970's first floor kitchen, mudroom and bath. I knew because the 1st project was completed 8 years ago and remains in great shape - quality construction, that I asked for, paid for, and got in spades. The kitchen renovation was tricky, the house is a 100 yr old colonial and blending the old with the new was a priority. JMCs high standard of care, easy communication, and the desire to "get it right" gave me the confidence not to hire a interior designer. His subcontractors were courteous, timely and skilled - they were on-site daily. We are thankful and thrilled with the final product.

We converted one bedroom to a family room and then added two bedrooms and two baths. To begin with, Jay's proposal was excellent. It was very detailed and left no room for misunderstanding. Jay was on the job every day. He had a good crew and got along well with the city inspectors. He was detail oriented and took pride in his work. He was pretty much on schedule and was responsive to our concerns. We are very pleased with the outcome, especially the quality of work.
