My experience with Barry was simply awful. A project that was supposed to take 3 months instead took 2 years. Barry was unresponsive and unhelpful.

We strongly recommend Stohlman & Kilner and will definitely consult them again if we launch another renovation. Barry Stohlman is a true craftsman as are his employees--detail-oriented, fine workmanship. The project was organized very effectively and came in on time and on budget. They completely renovated our kitchen and we could not be happier.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Elizabeth. It was truly our pleasure, and I look forward to serving you again someday. Enjoy your kitchen!
We HIGHLY recommend Stohlman & Kilner.
Here's one of the greatest compliments I can give- we NEVER had a single argument or disagreement with Barry or Pat. All our neighbors who have had renovations talk about the difficulties they had with their contractors. This simply never happened with Barry and Pat. They are a pleasure to work with.
And of course, their work is fantastic. We are thrilled with the quality of their work, their efficiency, their professionalism. The work was completed on time and consistent with the budget we'd established. The men who work for them are friendly and skilled.
We highly recommend them and know you'll be thrilled that you hired them.

You cannot go wrong with Barry and Pat remodeling your house. Referred to them by word of mouth, I have retained them to perform two major renovation projects in our 1940's brick colonial house. One project involved a complete kitchen expansion and major structural changes. Consummate professionals, these men work smartly, and work hard, to get projects done on time and under budget. They are men of integrity, completely trustworthy with our home and our wallet. They are good communicators. And they know family life, proving time and again to be extremely considerate of the disruption that a major project can cause to a household. Those qualities, and their combined experience of many decades in the profession, make them irreplaceable. We got exceptional value and exceptional service. I cannot overstate how strongly I recommend Stohlman & Kilner!

Thank you so, so much for your kind words! It was truly a pleasure serving you and your family.
First the good news. Barry and Pat did a fine job building a deck for our house. They were prompt, professional, and the work was done very well. We're very happy with the outcome.
Now the bad news. They also took care of a leak for us: water coming down from upstairs damaging a downstairs ceiling. Not long after this, the problem recurred. They came to look at it, and we also discussed the possibility of a project replacing our kitchen floor. Then, radio silence: we tried e-mail/phone multiple times with no response.
Finally I left a message using the word "warranty" prominently, and that very quickly got me a call back. In that conversation I was told that the new leak was not a recurrence of the old one, so this was not a warranty issue. When I inquired as to why we had not even gotten a return call from them, I was told fairly explicitly, and definitely unapologetically, that the work we needed was just too small a category of job for them. They didn't call back to decline further involvement because the job was too small; they just didn't see it as important enough to call back.
Two take-aways here. First, a previous customer -- someone, I might add, who would have been happy to recommend these folks to neighbors in a neighborhood that *does* frequently have big jobs -- was treated as dispensible. Second, according to someone new we brought in who fixed the new problem, the recurrence of the issue came about because of some caulking that did not take place, which one would reasonably have expected to have been done the first time around.
Tempted though I am to post just one star, to be fair I have given two ("just okay" on this site's scale) because the work on the deck was done very well. But you won't find me going back to these guys, even for the kind of large remodeling job they seem to prefer. As far as I'm concerned, the way you treat your customer, even the little customer, matters.

I am sorry you did not like the way things turned out on fixing a few of the issues around your home. I guess we were not aware you were upset or that we dropped the ball. If you are interested in getting back in touch to straighten out something, you can email barry@stohlmankilner.com. We do take care of our customers, even small projects.

Barry Stohlman is a master in his craft. He listens carefully and works with a clients goals and budget. We also had to work within a timeframe. He was able to completely gut our kitchen and finish it in two months.

Pat Kilner and Barry Stohlman have built a half dozen projects in team with my firm, Ballard + Mensua Architecture. We recommend Stohlman Kilner to home owners looking for a good builder or for a design build firm for simpler projects when a more talented architect is not required.

Pat and Barry rescued us from disaster. A huge tree destroyed our roof during Superstorm Sandy and allowed the rain to pour into our home for hours. At first light, Stohlman/Kilner had a crew with a massive tarp covering our house, preventing even more damage.
These guys held our hands through a massive repair project. New rafters, new roof, new floors, new drywall and electrical. Everything was first rate. Any time we needed an explanation or a brainstorm, they were there. Totally trustworthy, always friendly, always responsive. They met with us at night and on weekends.
They also built us a beautiful screened-in porch, a large retaining wall, and a new kitchen with custom-built cabinets and granite counter tops.
All of it came in on time and on budget.
I would give Stohlman/Kilner my highest recommendation.

I cannot recommend StohlmanKilner highly enough. They were dream contractors, starting and finishing our project (home office addition and kitchen remodel) on time and on budget. They executed our architect Seth Ballard's complicated and beautiful home office design to perfection and were able to provide expert advice on our kitchen remodel. Their staff and subs were first rate - honest craftsmen who left the work space clean and tidy every day. The space that they built for us makes me happy every day single day. They are terrific to work with.

We hired Stohlman and Kilner to do a bump out addition on two ground floor bedrooms and to create a master walk-in closet. From start to finish, this project was a huge success. Stohlman and Kilner knew immediately what we were intending to accomplish and came to us with an ideal solution to seamlessly tie-in the addition to our house. Once work began, the crew was prompt, courteous and worked both tirelessly and efficiently. They adhered to the budget and the timeline, finishing a few days early! They were friendly, professional and conscientious, not just with us, but with our neighbors as well. They had other, bigger jobs going on at the same time, but we never felt that ours wasn't a priority. We were very pleased with their workmanship and are thrilled with our addition. After working with other contractors on our house, Stohlman and Kilner were by far the best.

When one considers knocking walls down in their house, and embarking on a significant renovation project - that will forever define how you exist and find happiness in your home - the first word that jumps to mind is TRUST.
Barry Stohlman and Pat Kilner are first and foremost "good people" (as my father would say) and we wholly trusted them with our project.
Beyond trust, they do amazing work and surround themselves with a highly skilled and extremely respectful team.
Our project involved considerable construction from basement, to main living area, to master bedroom and even roof! At the end of every day, what could have been a disaster area, was always clean and tidy job site.
With two children, a cat and a dog, something so minor, really meant a lot.
The design, craftsmanship, and quality of build is awesome. We simply love our "new" home.

For years we had been mulling over options to renovate and increase the living space in our home, somewhat nervous about taking this big step. We consulted with many people and after a lot of due diligence, selected Pat Kilner and Barry Stohlman to do the work. A friend recommended them us by saying we could trust them because they " do great work, are honest, and were on time and on budget" when they did a big project for her. Her description on all fronts was accurate. We started working with Stohlman & Kilner in late May 2012 and the bulk of the interior of our house was finished by early October 2012. Pat and Barry did an exceptional job. Our renovated home, now double its original size, is better than we could have imagined. The space is smart and useable (we did not want wasted space), the attention to detail is great, and the quality of work is outstanding. For example, they did a number of fabulous built-ins (multiple book shelves, mud room lockers, sideboard with wine rack) that have added a wonderful touch to many rooms. In addition, we were thoroughly impressed with the quality of the Stohlman Kilner team--every person working at our house was diligent, respectful and a pleasure to have around. We lived in the home for the greater part of the renovation and Pat and Barry did all they could to accomodate us in that regard. The outcome is fabulous. The added space has been wonderful for our large family and allows us to entertain comfortably. We recommend Stohlman Kilner without any reservation to anyone seriously considering a renovation.
