About Us

Alloy (n.) — a union of different elements, resulting in a material that is stronger, lighter and more versatile. Alloy Workshop is an architecture, construction, and graphic design studio based in Charlottesville, Virginia. As the name suggests, Alloy unites elements of the design process: licensed architects, licensed contractors, and experienced graphic designers. Alloy provides a unique combination: a company spanning the entire design spectrum. While focused on providing design-driven solutions we are anchored by a practical knowledge of construction and production.

Alloy built a porch and dormer on our ugly brick house six years ago and totally transformed its look. They were great to get along with and there were no cost surprises. The construction was completed on time. They were very tolerant of our stupid homeowner questions and requests. They were nice to our dogs. One weekend during a storm, they came out to make sure the tarp covering an exposed area was secure. This year we are having them design and build an addition and re-do a kitchen. (So, going back to them demonstrates what we think of them.) We are still in the design phase but we hope to get work started soon. They are still tolerant. And people still ask about the porch.

Alloy helped us with design and construct for our kitchen addition/renovation. They did an excellent job with all tasks. The design team was amazing at listening to our wants and needs for our new kitchen and developed a plan we would have never thought of on our own, that turned out to be amazing! The construction team was over the top fantastic! They were always neat and clean and worked toward perfection with everything they did. We enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend them for both design and construct.

While the architects were personable and prompt in scheduling meetings, after three sessions and $4,000 there still was not a concept for my small project of enclosing a balcony off a bedroom and redoing an existing bath. The architect continued to present designs that I had specificly said I did not want. In addition, he said that one design I asked for was not possible because it was a code violation. When I checked with the County Code office I was told tthat this was not accurate. But he - or his intern - had already prepared more useless drawings. To his credit, he did deduct $900+ for "drawings the client did not ask for". Otherwise my bill would have been close to $5,000. The architect was gracious when I said I regretted that we had not been able to develop a productive working relationship and promptly forwarded the CAD discs.

Alloy transformed our screened porch into a vaulted ceiling family room. The quality of construction is very good and has held up well of the last year. We really like that on our 1949 house, the new room is matches the style of the house very nicely but is modern at the same time...that's hard to pull off. One of the big differences between Alloy and other builders is the quality of their staff. These guys are well spoken, clean, mannered, and trustworthy. I never hesitated to give them a key to the house.

Alloy's team built a shop addition on the back my detached garage. I needed a parking space for a boat and camper behind the shop which required raising the roof of the garage. I also had some other preconceptions about how to accomplish all that I wanted plus other unrelated projects. Everyone on the team listened carefully to my wishes and ultimately designed and built a great structure. They kept the project site clean and quiet, very respectful of the neighbors and the tight parking. Any future projects will include Alloy.

What a great team of professionals to work with! We love our new kitchen and bathroom addition! The design process for our project was very collaborative and Alloy provided great design ideas and insight. The transition to construction went smoothly, with the firm conscientious of our budget. The construction crew solved many tricky details with lots of thought and precision. Overall a very positive experience! Thank you!

We can't say enough about our experience with Alloy. They've got that perfect mix of professionalism and familiarity... We feel entirely comfortable voicing questions and concerns with Dan and the Team, but they're "pro" all the way, and their work speaks for itself. When it's all finished, we'll be proud to show off our studio to all of our friends and family! At every step of the way, from initial design brainstorming to the nitty-gritty details, the folks at Alloy have been top-notch.

Working with Alloy Workshop has been very easy. They came up with great ideas to fit our needs, style, and priorities. They helped us make decisions about the project. Their meticulous planning of the project has made the construction stage very smooth. Everyone who works there is super friendly and professional.
