Given a challenging lot configuration and topography, along with privacy issues, we had to get creative in designing this home. The home is divided into four basic living zones: private owner’s suite, informal living area, kids area upstairs, and a flexible guest entertaining area. The entry is unique in that it takes you directly through to the outdoor living area, and also provides separation of the owners’ private suite from the rest of the home. There are no formal living or dining areas; instead the breakfast and family rooms were enlarged to entertain more comfortably in an informal manner. One great feature of the detached casita is that it has a lower activity area, which helps the house connect to the property below. This contemporary haven in Barton Creek is a beautiful example of a chic and elegant design that creates a very practical and informal space for living.
Normandy Remodeling
This once vintage, now modern, Evanston kitchen features dramatic contrast and visual interest. The vertical backsplash tile and stainless steel range hood chimney adds visual height to the kitchen as well as the tall cabinetry. The kitchen island not only provides ample storage, but additional countertop space and a eat-in kitchen seating. This project was a complete kitchen remodel of a 1980’s kitchen that maintained the current floor plan while redefining the relationship between the kitchen and family room. The cabinetry includes high glass cupboards to house special curios and allows for an easy, elegant transition into the contiguous family room. Surfaces such as the soap stone counter surrounding the farm sink and the wooden dining bar, were selected to accommodate the preferences of an active cook.
In Detail Interiors
This kitchen was 100% designed with entertaining in mind! From the expansive countertops to the fabulous wooden butcher block addition to the island surface - we love the versatility of the space and imagine holidays here must be supreme! There is a huge amount of storage in this kitchen with all the cabinets and drawers, too. Classic colors, warm and cozy, just pure kitchen perfection!

Mark Brand Architecture
Our designs for these two speculative houses in Noe Valley were inspired by the atrium houses designed in the 50’s for Bay Area developer Joseph Eichler. Entered via bridges from the street, the two houses share a sunken forecourt with stairs down to the lower level. A gull wing roof design and cantilevered elements at the front and rear of the house evoke the spirit of mid-Century modernism. The steeply down-sloping lot allowed us to provide sweeping views of the city from the two upper levels. Tall, skylit master suites at the lowest levels open out onto decks and the garden. Originally designed as mirrored images of each other, the design evolved through the negotiations of the right and left neighbors to respond to their differing needs.
