Sunset Magazine Idea House

Do you lay 2 levels of concrete and then lay the timber on the lower part, or can you lay a thin layer of concrete of the consistency required for flooring on top of an even concrete base? I love the idea of concrete flooring but want to spruce it up in the living areas with a timber trim.
