Sonoma Residence

The requirements for the design of this 1,236 square foot entertainment and exercise addition to a residence in Sonoma left interesting architectural and design issues with challenging structural engineering. First and foremost, the client wanted an octagon with the interior space to be completely open and free of structural walls and beams. They also wanted views overlooking their family vineyard to be maintained and the addition to match the existing house. The building was constructed with a steel frame structure with piers driven 24 feet into the soil to maximize the interior open space and exterior openings. Finishes to match the existing house were used throughout the exterior.
