Adding different patio levels by manipulating the grades is one way Deck and Patio can create the sense of a larger space, which is what we did here. Of course, such gradations have to be more than attractive, they must be functional. There needs to be room left for some lawn, plantings, and the patio/deck layouts must be of sufficient size to accommodate chaise lounges, dining tables and chairs, plus an outdoor kitchen if desired.

Just a few weeks later and already the garden is flourishing.

The brief here was to transform this garden into a calming, sophisticated oasis with a grey, purple and white colour pallet. With all this in mind we chose a lovely combination of small shrubs and perennial plants to give colour all year round. A new real turf lawn was laid, the fence painted in slate greyand all paving slabs jet washed. Transformed! Before and after pictures of the entire project can be found on our website

The lower lawn of this hillside garden opens to an informal croquet area. A small writers cabin (right) is tucked away in the shade. The hillside path is carefully designed to accommodate wheelbarrows and aging in place.

An existing tie wall was keeping the soil away from the house. The tie wall needed to be replaced with something that would last much longer. We used the same Brisa Wall block from Belgard that we installed in the front. The dry creek on the right side helps to carry a lot of the heavy spring rain through the yard to keep the rest of the landscaping from eroding into the woods. Plants and hardscaping take up the small section of the backyard so no need to mow any turf that wouldn't grow well in this area.

Round concrete stepping stones add a playful touch to this small patch of lawn.
