Swedish design firm Cortina & Käll were tasked with connecting a new 1,400-square-foot apartment to an existing 3,000-square-foot apartment in a New York City high-rise. Their goal was to give the apartment a scale and flow benefitting its new larger size. “We envisioned a light and sculptural spiral staircase at the center of it all. The staircase and its opening allowed us to achieve the desired transparency and volume, creating a dramatically new and generous apartment,” said Francisco Cortina. The balusters and doors are painted nearly black in Railings by Farrow & Ball, adding a rich custom look to the staircase and hallway. A Century bench, wrapped in granite sheepskin, features a weightless acrylic base. What appears as art above the bench is actually an additional television for the family to enjoy. We love the board and baton detailing on the side of the staircase wall.

In this serene family home we worked in a palette of soft gray/blues and warm walnut wood tones that complimented the clients' collection of original South African artwork. We happily incorporated vintage items passed down from relatives and treasured family photos creating a very personal home where this family can relax and unwind.
