Use reflected lightRemoving the central pendant in a living room isn’t a terrible idea – but it means you’ll have to rely on much more atmospheric table and floor lamps (which, by the way, you should put on a convenient ring circuit to have one-switch control). But if you need to up your lighting levels, place lamps in front of mirrors. Even wisely chosen soft bulbs will reflect lots of light effectively.

Hang mirrors in recessesEven the brightest of rooms have dark spots, with alcoves the biggest culprits. You can combat them by painting the walls in pale colours that recede rather than dark ones that advance, and by hanging mirrors in them to increase the feeling of depth in the room – and, of course, to reflect light.

Bring in quirky patternsAdd an unexpected twist to a traditional living room by introducing bold patterns. The bright geometric design on these armchairs is repeated in the monochrome rug, while the strong colours clash with the bright red fireplace guards. The furniture and accessories with black edges cleverly punctuate the colours, while the symmetrical layout stops the space looking cluttered.
