A good view of the mirror-imaged dual islands with zebrawood bar tops and stainless steel counters. Each island has its own sink and Miele dishwasher for two cooks. The backs of the islands feature shelves for cookbooks.

The owner's buoyant personality, own design work, and extensive art collection inspire the renovation and addition to this Potrero Hill home. Of course, the dramatic views of the city from the site, which is open on three sides, contribute their fare share to the project's success as well. Here, we worked specifically to "curate" the natural light — using it to draw people up and through the space, to focus attention on the collection of art objects, and to propel them back out to panoramic views of the city beyond. As in all of our work, we were strategic in the use of resources, maintaining the original character of the front of the home, while subtly coaxing more character out of materials, such as simple exterior siding, at the rear

Showcase house pantry that I worked on along with Lisa Ball of DesignbyLisa. The space had to be durable and family friendly. We used cleanable vinyl wallcovering, brushed stainless steel hardware, and maintenance free quartz countertops with an under mount round bar sink. The runner was constructed of commercial grade carpet tiles. Photo credit to Mark Ehlen.

Back-painted glass backsplash and flat panel cabinetry make for quick and easy clean up. Reed glass panel doors allow for the kitchen to be closed off from the rest of the house (containing aromas and noise) but light can still be shared with adjacent rooms. Reed glass and glass shelving in cabinetry lightens the feel of the work area and provides a display space for favorite glassware and ceramics.

Holley House location: Garrison, NY size: 7,000 s.f. date: completed 2006 contact: hMa hanrahanMeyers architects The client commissioned hanrahanMeyers to design a 7,000 square foot house on a wooded site. The house is a second home for this client whose primary residence is a loft in lower Manhattan. The loft was featured at the Un-Private House show at MoMA, and which traveled internationally. The house program includes a master bedroom suite in a separate pavilion; an entrance pavilion with two guest bedrooms and media room; and a third pavilion with living room, dining, and kitchen. Two stone walls are the main elements of the house, defining and separating the master bedroom suite from the entry area and marking the edge to the public spaces: living, dining, and kitchen. South of the house is a pool and a pool house. The house was designed to be part of its site, incorporating wood, stone, and water to create a quiet and restful retreat from New York City.
