I guess we could also build out the hearth instead of leaving it floor level I've saved some pictures along this vein also so that we don't have to deal with the floor. I'm personally a fan of fireboxes at this height so you can sit by them and it's just safer with kids. The grey one above is the same concept; raise it and build the hearth out underneath.
