After the transformation took place, about 6 months later. The yard was divided into different rooms for different uses. Raised redwood planter boxes were used for veggies and herbs to grow. A vine is being trained to go over the arbor and Callistemon 'Slim' will fill in the "wall" to divide the space. The arbor ushers you into the backyard entertaining area with a sail cloth "ceiling" to block the harsh sun.

This small sloped backyard was terraced for more useable space. Existing Daylilies were planted en masse at the foot of the wall. Plants are predominantly southern California natives. Maintenance of the plants on the terraces is nearly non-existent.

Our clients have a busy life so they wanted their inner city garden to be low fuss and look low fuss. They wanted outdoor spaces that looked relaxed, with a simple and soft palette of finishes that acknowledged their coastal location. The site conditions and their brief also called for plants that were hardy and that would tolerate the full sun and sandy soils. The structural finishes and the plant colours provide a harmonious blend and compliment the design choices of the interior.

A charred wood plank wall defines the drought-tolerant garden of a Ventura, CA bungalow. We used the ancient Japanese method of shou-sugi-ban, which rendered the reclaimed cedar (traditionally Japanese cypress) fire, rot and pest resistant while imparting a striking black, slightly iridescent finish that’s both modern and low maintenance. images | Gretchen Claire Garnett

This elegant low maintenance deck in Cheshire, CT is built with function and beauty in mind. The deck is built with low maintenance Fiberon decking, with Feeney cable railing with a cedar cap. This outdoor oasis also includes a contemporary pergola designed over the homeowner’s spa. The pergola becomes a design focus and also adds privacy and shade to the deck. The pergola features stainless steel posts to further the urban feel of the space. The clients of the Brooklyn Brownstone backyard requested a serene, open, contemporary design for their space. We kept the color palette simple with greens, grays, and small pops of color from white and pink flowers and a neutral wooden tile. The two comfy lounge chairs and ottomans are from West Elm, and the table belonged to the owners prior to the installation.
