What Houzz contributors are saying:

SymmetryThis living space’s symmetrical design draws the eye immediately up to the wallpapered ceiling and ceiling fixture. The screens in the back of the room anchor the space, focusing attention on the unexpectedly tall piece of art.Take a look at these ceiling designs that give wings to imagination

This room’s ceiling is just a shade over 8 feet tall, and then lower than standard height as it slopes down at the sides. Technically, crown moulding is used at the junction of the wall and ceiling, but in this room that would have been very low and at an odd angle. By continuing the wall colour up the walls onto the ceiling and placing the moulding in from the edge of the ceiling, it gives the illusion of taller walls, thereby making the room appear taller. The moulding is also not very wide – my guess is 3 to 4 inches – so it isn’t too heavy for the scale of the room.Take a look at these tricks to make a room seem bigger

7. Elevated living room The ceiling in this popular living room is a real showstopper. Within a delicate frame of white moulding, the gold leaf pattern of the wallpaper finds an echo in the sunburst mirror, which has been secured to a joist in the middle of the ceiling. The screens and the decorative object on the mantel carry the gold motif further throughout the room, helping the decor feel cohesive. Again, you’d probably want to enlist the help of a pro to install wallpaper, ceiling moulding and a ceiling mirror.

The designer of the living space here created drama on the ceiling with wallpaper and a ceiling mounted mirror, however, this same look can be achieved with a light fixture to illuminate the space.Browse through images of low ceiling lighting

Use a pair to add symmetryThese ornate room screens add glitz and style to this formal living room. Flanking the fireplace with them also adds balance and symmetry.

2. Employ metals as wall and ceiling accentsMetallic painted accents set a glamorous stage and can team beautifully with accessories. In this living room, the glossy ceiling with gold motifs blends seamlessly with the starburst gold light, the gold-framed folding screens and the other metallic accessories.
