FINGER JOINTS

Finger joints seem to be a constant theme in many of my projects. The idea of allowing two materials to interlock is so much more intriguing and revealing than a simple butt joint. Of course, our fingers interlock with such ease, so perhaps that is a hidden motivation! In the counter detail, Belgian Blue limestone interlocks with black walnut. The table detail shows custom textured bronze legs woven flush into a Sapele table surface. Finally, the two door examples show Douglas fir being used with finger jointing in two different applications. In the Lake Forest Door, the wood forms a kind of woven screen in front of satin etch glass. In the “zipper” door, the fingers allow a door panel to hinge and swing out, so the door becomes “L” shaped.
