Contemporary Shaker Kitchen by Simon Taylor Furniture

This contemporary shaker kitchen project was a complete refurbishment of an existing kitchen dining space in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. For this project our client was looking for a complete redesign of their existing kitchen diner. Our client had recently purchased the property and the existing kitchen was badly designed, with the oven bank being nearly 3 metres from the nearest work surface. There was also only a tiny utility cupboard which was not sufficient for the property size. Our client also wanted a change to the look of the kitchen, the existing kitchen was modern but felt dated and a little cold. They were looking to create a warm, welcoming space for themselves and their guests. In order to give the client exactly what they were looking for we removed a structural pillar to allow for a tall run of cabinetry. We also created a new opening, and installed a new wall, blocking off one corner of the space to create a large utility room which is accessed from a secret door made to look like a tall furniture cabinet. The island could then be repositioned, allowing it to be used from the ovens and sink, becoming a key functional element as well as providing both high level breakfast seating and an informal dining space which links to the television and family zone. Classic shaker cabinetry gives the kitchen a sense of timelessness but has been contemporised with simple framing and oversized stiles and rails. Heather coloured glass splashbacks soften the look and contrast beautifully with the end grain American Black Walnut elements.
