4 Celebrate shapes, lines and silhouettesSource clean-lined furniture…Furniture designed with clean lines that cuts a crisp silhouette will bring a contemporary edge to any space. In a living room, think seating that stands smartly on stiletto-sharp legs and has neat upholstery. Then team it with a low table made with eye-catching angles, and a generous standard lamp that creates a crisp silhouette against a plain wall.

ProportionMeasure the area you’ve designated for your new sofa, taking into account the size and shape of the room. Once you’ve settled on a sofa that you think will fill the space, note the sofa’s measurements and mark them on the floor with string. This way you can be sure the sofa will fit the space and that there will be room to walk around or past it.Tip: Equally important is how you plan to get your sofa into the room. If you have narrow doorways, or live in an apartment accessed via an elevator or stairs, consider whether you will be able to easily manoeuvre the sofa into your home.

You crave a big sofaYour trad two-seater just won’t cut it if you are a true devotee of contemporary style. For you, only a large, sprawling corner sofa or, at a push, two sofas positioned opposite each other are acceptable. The shape must be clean and sleek, the upholstery neat. Chesterfields and any seating that could be termed ‘shabby chic’ has no place in your pad.Take a look at this essential sofa buying guide

Go wide for family viewingIs movie night something you and your brood do on a regular basis? If so, you need a sofa with serious width. This design’s low back and deep seats, not to mention the generous cushioning and L shape, make it the perfect model for slouching with feet up on footstools or the coffee table.

1. Like sofa as back isn't too high. Not sure about the red. Table is interesting as it's different. Like the fact it has legs. They look like metal...would prefer wood.
