Introduce a folding screenOne low-commitment way to divide a space is with a decorative folding screen. These vertical barriers can also inject pattern and colour into a room, and they can easily be moved around to other areas of the home or taken out completely when you’re ready for a full open-plan scheme again.Notice how the screen here creates an intimate seating area while adding colour and pattern. The striking light fixture carries weight and also helps to define this space. At night, the light will punctuate the zone even more.

Create a room within a room with freestanding accordion-style folding screens to demarcate spaces. They don’t need any kind of installation and you can move them around wherever and whenever you please. Just fold and stow them away when not required. How to Partition the Dining Area

1. Foldable screensFolding or accordion screens are one of the easiest ways to separate spaces, especially for rented homes, as they are free-standing and not attached to the floor or wall. There’s no installation of any kind required – just open and place; with the added advantage of being able to move them around wherever and whenever you please. Similarly, you can fold and stow them away when not required.

12. Tiny nookPortable seats are the best way to build flexibility into a seating layout in a small apartment. Bring them out when guests arrive, take them back when they’re gone, and use them in between as desk chairs, window seats or anything else. A simple loveseat, a pair of pouffes and an old-style armchair are all it takes for this small living room interior to look inviting and homely. The loveseat appears to be the only bulky element in the arrangement, while the others look light enough to be hauled around when required.Read more:9 Seating Arrangement Ideas for Small Living RoomsCan a Living Room Be Better Without a Sofa?Tell us:Which of these sitting room designs for small spaces did you like best? 6. Use soft partitions to create intimate areasWho says that small spaces cannot have intimate, private corners? Like in this modern small drawing room, use a drawing room partition to cordon off one area from the rest. Choose wooden or fabric screens, curtains, louvred blinds, sliding or pocket glass doors. Tip: Sectional sofas, too, can be used to play the role of a soft partition in a space. The back of the L-shaped sofa will demarcate the seating area from the rest of the living room so that the flow of the conversation and views remain within one area.
