Mid Century Modern Addition
Mid Century Modern Addition
Kipnis Architecture + PlanningKipnis Architecture + Planning
This is the addition to a early 1960's split level. The addition encloses a family room and dining room. The dining room is defined by the higher ceiling. Daylighting is brought further into the interior by the use of a light shelf, which bounces the daylighting off of it and reflects it up onto the ceiling of the taller space. The overhang that the light shelf is made from blocks out the high summer sun, while still admitting the low winter sun for passive solar gain. The existing home's exterior was is located at the far left. http://www.kipnisarch.com Kipnis Architecture + Planning

View into formal dining room from grand entry foyer. The floors of this home were stained with a custom blend of walnut and dark oak stain to let the grain of the white oak shine through. The walls have all been paneled and painted a crisp white to set off the stark gray used on the upper part of the walls, above the paneling. A silk light grey rug sits proud under a 12' wide custom dining table. Reclaimed wood planks from Canada and an industrial steel base harden the soft lines of the room and provide a bit of whimsy. Dining benches sit on one side of the table, and four leather and nail head studded chairs flank the other side. The table comfortably sits a party of 12.

We restored original dining room buffet, box beams and windows. Owners removed a lower ceiling to find original box beams above still in place. Buffet with beveled mirror survived, but not the leaded glass. New art glass panels were made by craftsman James McKeown. Sill of flanking windows was the right height for a plate rail, so there may have once been one. We added continuous rail with wainscot below. Since trim was already painted we used smooth sheets of MDF, and applied wood battens. Arch in bay window and enlarged opening into kitchen are new. Benjamin Moore (BM) colors are "Confederate Red" and "Atrium White." Light fixtures are antiques, and furniture reproductions. David Whelan photo

By broadening the opening between the original house and a typical side infill extension, we were able to design an area for eating that is broader than in a traditional form of layout. Wall lamps and pendants were used throughout to avoid a reliance on spotlights - again more in line with a traditional design for the interiors.

Creating smaller areas within a large kitchen creates everyday flexibility. The gallery serves as the understated approach to the primary suite and also provides a smaller dining experience for the homeowners for morning coffee overlooking their backyard. The cozy nook radiates the mood of a Euro café. Glass spans the length of the gallery, flooding it with year-round sunlight. Wood flooring in the kitchen transitions to a deeply-hued natural slate, warming the white perimeter. French doors connect easily to the outside spaces and are capped with arched windows to express the transom theming.
