A Three Acre Rock Quarry: Landscape between a rock and a hard place

The stone field on the right side of the entry to the house was more developed and hosted an ancient olive tree and a California Toyen. The berm, being larger than the accompanying berm was further developed by creating stone walls and paths over the areas that could not be planted. The effect created the sense that the planting was a vast oasis. The use of the stone in very specific patterns lent to the feeling that there was also life and movement in the stone. The property was no longer a vast quarry but a miraculous and lush estate teeming with life. Photo: Xavier Perez-Grobet
