What to Do With Diwali Lights When Diwali Is Over

Don't put the beautiful sparklies in storage. Here are some great ways to use them throughout the year

Are you increasingly becoming tired of buying paper lanterns and string lights to dress up your windows, only to discard them after the week-long festivities? Or perhaps you have those tried and tested, royal (mess) mesh of loyal fairy lights from eons ago that you put right back into deep storage the minute the festival is over? Well, store no more. Here are some fun ways to incorporate them into your decor and flaunt them throughout the year.

Style with twigs
Bring nature indoors by picking any branch or twig with an interesting shape and wrap the fairy lights around it. This idea is great for homeowners who would like to explore a romantic ‘outdoor’ experience. The decorated branch can serve as an artsy piece above headboard too.

In the kids room
Decorate a part of your baby’s room or ceiling with fairy lights. The gentle lights will keep the baby enthralled, and they will add to the magical decor of the nursery. They are easy on the eyes and will bring a gentle flair to the decor. They will work great in grown-up children’s rooms as well.

Fashion a lightbox
Bring a glass cube box and ditch all your battery-operated fairy lights in it. Install this piece anywhere in your house and I promise you, it will not just be spectacular but will also be great conversation starter when guests come over.

Light up the bedroom
Invest in unconventional lanterns that stay in trend all year round. Paper mache lanterns never go out of style. Once you’re through with diwali, bring them indoors and decorate your bedroom with these feel-good lights. They give off a great Art Deco vibe.

The centrepiece
Moroccan lanterns, I reckon, are a good long-term investment. They not only serve as a befitting addition to any Middle-Eastern-inspired or traditional living spaces but also spell magic in a room when given more prominence. Don’t hide them, flaunt them where everyone can see.

As a marquee
Create your own DIY marquee letters. Find a good position for your wall letters. Use tape to stick the diwali lights onto them. Very glamorous, very chic.

The lit-up words will form an attractive backdrop for the living room, the bedroom, and the kids’ room. Why not let the children make them as a DIY project? It will be an afternoon well spent.
Outdoors
Last but not the least, if maintained well, the string lights or shades can continue to create an inviting ambience in your verandah, patio or terrace area, all year round. String them up from overhead trees, around your lawn/plants or tape them up as creepers.

Share how you used your string lights in your home this Diwali. Post your pictures here.
