1. Calculate the cost of the marble
The first step is to calculate the exact quantity of marble required for the flooring and skirting of your home.
Multiply the length of the room with its width to get the carpet area of the room. Follow the same process for the other open areas of the home where marble flooring needs to be installed. Add all these individual areas to find out the total square footage of marble required.
For example, if the length of the room is 12 feet and width of the room is 15 feet, then the carpet area of the room is 180 square feet.
For the marble skirting, calculate the running length of the wall that will require floor skirting. The height of skirting ranges between 4 and 6 inches. Multiply the running length of the walls by 6 inches (feet x 0.5 foot) to get the square footage of marble required for the skirting.

Add at least 10–15 per cent extra area of marble to the calculated quantity of marble. This extra quantity takes care of the wastage caused during cutting and laying of the marble floor.
Cost:
Cost:
- Good-quality Indian marble starts at ₹80 per square foot.
- Italian marble starts at ₹350 per square foot. Keep in mind that Italian marble is softer than Indian marble and requires skilled labour to carry out the installation work.
2. Labour cost
The cost of labour for cutting and laying of the marble slabs is around ₹80 per square foot. You need to multiply the labour cost with the total square feet of marble flooring to find out the total labour cost.
Note: During installation, the marble contractor or labour needs to match the grains and patterns between adjoining marble slabs, as can be seen in the image above.

3. Cost of fixing material
A mixture of cement and sand is used for the installation of marble flooring in the proportion of 1:4, which means one part of cement should be mixed with four parts of sand for laying the marble flooring.
The cost of fixing material comes up to ₹40 per square foot. Multiply the rate of material with the total square feet of marble flooring to find out the total material cost.

4. Inlaid flooring
Give your marble floor an intricate look with inlaid flooring. This detailing work is not easy on the pocket and requires specialised craftsmen to do the job. The cost of inlaid flooring varies, depending on the complexity of design, and can go up to ₹2500 per square foot.

5. Marble polishing
After installation, the marble flooring needs to be polished to achieve a mirror finish. This can be done with seven rounds of polish with carborundum (an abrasive stone) and a final finish with tin oxide buffing that adds lustre to the marble. The cost of marble polishing is around ₹40 per square foot.
Note: Italian marble shines more than Indian marble after mirror polishing.
