The south garden is OK for peppers, okra, eggplant, green onions, leeks and green beans but the kale and chard just kind of hold their own where in the north one they grow a lot. I can grow basil, arugula and Chinese mustard salad greens all summer in the north garden if I plant them in June.

Have you tried shade cloth? I'm thinking about it for the south garden.

Our winter growing season - that's a nine foot snow drift on the northern fence row after three days of 50 mph wind. When I get my reading done by the wood stove.

Enjoy.

Our summer is your winter! Only the very hardy survive. Yes, I’ve tried shade cloth in the summer. Have you tried a heat lamp in the garden in the winter? Lol! Each part of the country has its own successes & problems. It’s up to us to adapt. :)

The universe is our classroom if we chose to learn. I caught myself doing something stupid a couple days ago. I came home from being out of town for couple days and it rained the first day we were gone so when we got back the Japanese beetles were going after SOME (I don't know why they like some and not others) of the basil, okra and green beans. So, I used some Sevin on them that night then realized I had sprayed the blossoms on the green beans. Insecticide is nondiscriminatory in what it kills so I went out early the next morning and sprayed off the Sevin on the bean blossoms so the pollinators would not be killed when they came to pollinate. Poor little guys don't need any more grief for just doing an indispensable job we often take for granted. If only politicians did as good a job (and it was as easy to get rid of them)!

A sunlamp - now why didn't I think of that?
