9. Fiery Backdrop
Though the fire feature is often a backyard focal point, it can also serve as a backdrop, as shown in this Spanish-style patio in Malibu, California. Renovated by Interior Archaeology, the courtyard centers on the cozy outdoor dining setup. The tile-framed fireplace anchors the back wall, bisecting the built-in outdoor kitchen counter.

This elegant fire pit echoes the linear quality of the home’s surrounding features. Its extra-wide ledge leaves a place for guests to prop up their feet or rest a drink, and its semi-rugged stone surround calls to the woodland setting.
The long fire feature, which sits on an expansive elevated patio overlooking a golf course, also allows more people to admire the view while they enjoy the heat from the flames.

4. Beach Access
In Carpinteria, California, landscape designer and contractor Margie Grace built a backyard fire pit area that calls to the beach beyond. She trucked in sand for the floor, used the existing rock riprap as the foundation for the built-in bench and filled the gas fire pit with beach glass-like fire glass.
Maysun Wells, a local artisan and owner of Wells Concrete Works, made the furniture with ipe wood and cast concrete, embedded with sea glass, aggregate and fossil shells. The pieces are weatherproof and heavy enough to sustain the exposed coastal conditions.
