There are some material combinations that seem to just belong together. The amalgamation of wood and concrete is one of them. While both have an earthy character, naturally sourced wood exudes warmth and cosiness, whereas concrete is a man-made composite material with a cool aura. And yet, when they are brought together, they add drama to any space. Here are 12 spaces that do it brilliantly.

1. This bedroom balances the warmth of wooden elements such as the slats and seating with the coolness of concrete on the walls and floors. A slightly darker-hued, more textural version of the material is used in the skylit sit-in, creating a striking mix-and-match look.

2. The seamless integration of wood and concrete accentuate the minimalist decor of the space. Using both materials interchangeably on the stairs evokes subtle drama. The earthy walls also serve as the perfect backdrop for the wooden handrails and wood-framed windows.

3. Different forms of wood – diagonal strips on the ceiling and smooth wide panels along the door – come together with the dark patterned flooring to create an interesting foyer design.

4. This foyer makes a big first impression with its unfinished concrete ceiling that is offset by warm wooden elements such as the bench, door and so on. Elegant and chic.

5. Here, the double-height windows are layered with exposed RCC (reinforced cement concrete) slabs and customised wooden frames with brass inlay. The combo of cement fins and wooden frames lets in light restrictively, creating an interesting interplay of light and shadow.

6. This minimalist countertop design gets oodles of style with vertical battens. The hardy cement surface is heat- and scratch-resistant – a cool finish for the warm kitchen zone.

7. Horizontal wooden slats and textured, grainy cement are so different – and yet, when placed adjacent to each other, seem to fit right in. An added bonus is that both concrete and wood are also excellent choices for humid spaces like the bathroom.

8. Dark, rustic concrete flooring and traditional wooden elements in the furniture and louvred windows accentuate the throwback character of this living room.

9. Who says cement is always cold and grey. The seamless integration of the unexpectedly pale floor and fixed slatted screen unifies the different materials and subtly illuminates the space.

10. Unfinished concrete walls give this living room a contemporary yet earthy vibe. The contrast of wooden beams on the ceiling, cane-back chairs and natural light give it a cosy, inviting feel.
The Crossboundaries
11. Neutral white walls tie the moody greys with the louvred wooden panels that take up the entire wall – creating a unique style statement. An interesting fusion of grungy-chic concrete and classy wood.
Richard Cole Architecture
12. Both materials have their share of spotlight in this modern open kitchen. While the ceiling, windows and cabinets sing wood, the concrete kitchen island-cum-breakfast bar gives the area an edgy industrial vibe. Together, the duo create an inviting and relaxing ambience.
