A lounge is an informal area where you can lie or sit in a relaxed way. It can be a TV viewing space or simply an area to spend some quality time with family and friends. If you have a small space that you want to convert into a lounge, without making it look cramped or claustrophobic, take a cue from these small lounge room ideas. Not only do they make the most of different layouts, colours, light and so on, they show how you can ‘lounge’ large in a compact area.
1. Simply symmetrical
Symmetry is anything but boring with the right furniture in a small lounge room. Pushing the sofa against the wall gives enough room for thoroughfare in a narrow area. The multi-functional quilted pouffe can be used for seating, as a footrest or even coffee table. A cosy and comfortable space to snuggle up with your family and catch a game or watch a movie.

2. Asymmetrical layout
This space uses simple elements to create a sense of harmony, which is pivotal to asymmetrical decor. Both the sofa and lounge chair carry tinges of brown for a cohesive colour scheme, and serve as the primary focal point. The white walls give neutral relief and let the artwork serve as a secondary focal point – creating an ‘imbalanced’ balanced design.

3. Open up with colour
A combination of eclectic colour schemes visually connect different elements in this lounge. See how the pale-grey chaise gets a lift with alluring deep-green velvet armchairs and a funky bright yellow one. According to the designer Sanjyt Syngh, this small lounge doubles as the family room and is one of the most used areas in the house to relax or entertain.

4. Modern with an ethnic punch
This lounge layout is a mix of contemporary and vintage pieces. The tufted sectional sofa comes with a chaise with an inviting vibe and gives plenty of room for sitting or lying down – which adds to the ‘loungy’ feel. Layering the room with little ethnic accents and embellishments, such as the old-fashioned ceiling fan, infuses a traditional touch.

5. Less is more
The peppy chaise and floral-printed armchair are all this room needs. The woody hues of the bookshelf and sharp monotone pattern of the houndstooth accent wall provide the perfect backdrop for this colour fiesta and don’t use extra floor footage. The seating arrangement serves as a perfect spot for a relaxed chat or a hot cuppa.

6. By the bay
The bay window is a clever design idea for a small lounge room and gives an extra layer of seating along with a gorgeous view. A slender settee and huge windows give a bigger feel to the tiny square footage.

7. The ‘arty’ lounge
The muted charcoal grey wall serves as the suitable canvas for a Mumbai-themed photo collage on the wall. I love how the striking blue sofa and bright cushions enliven the space and create a happy chaos of colours.

8. Industrial with a touch of glamour
Exposed brick walls combined with the subtle bling of the upholstery work like a charm in this lounge. The peppy turquoise frame sections off the area while retaining a feel of openness. A distress-finish ottoman ties the ambience together.

9. Filled with natural light
Natural light streams in through the windows and brightens up the lounge. The furniture is minimal, with two sleek contemporary lounge chairs with footrests for optimum comfort. One can draw the blinds for TV viewing and, of course, to get a bit of privacy when needed.

10. Weaving magic with grey
Restful and soothing shades of grey and white combined with pops of colour create a cosy and intimate lounge room. Along with the sectional sofa and dark accent wall, grey is also reinforced in the undertones of the wall art.

11. Lush relaxation for one
Create the feel of a tropical lounge or quaint hideaway with a green wall. The single sunny yellow lounge chair keeps the small lounge room decor minimal – put your feet up with a book or music for some serious one-on-one time.

12. TV lounge or study
The open-shelf cabinet is the focal point of the lounge. It goes from floor to ceiling and wall to wall – providing plenty of storage to fit in the television and have a mini-library. Placing the sofa against the wall gives enough room for foot traffic and the accent arm-chair sets up the mood for movie time or a cosy reading space.

13. Leading the eye upwards
Diagonal battens cutting across the open shelving unit add a quirky spin to the library display. The criss-cross beams on the roof give a sense of continuity to the small lounge room decor and create a dynamic space with the eyes drawn towards the ceiling. It’s a bit of an indoor-outdoor space, perfect for relaxing.
