It is high time that you move past the traditional 3 piece sofa sets. It’s time to consider sectional or modular sofa arrangements that will not only offer comfortable seating for you and your guests but also stand out as enigmatic pieces of your decor.

Group ungroup
Modular sofas are extremely popular the world over for the seating flexibility they offer. Each piece can be rearranged to serve as a long sofa, settee or a love seat. So rather than investing in different pieces of furniture, you can group ungroup these sofas as per your requirement.

Bring people closer
Akin to a large circular dining table, a round sectional sofa works best for hosting intimate gatherings and bringing families together. Unlike the L-shaped sofas which are apt for corners, the circular sectionals create a more cosy setup, and can ideally be placed in the centre of a large living room as the main focal point.
Bassett Furniture
Just as outdoor sectional sofas can be useful for friends or family to huddle around, one can recreate that cosy feeling indoors too by creating a lounging zone. All you have to do is group individual pieces together to create your pit.

Modify as per requirement
Modular sofas and sectionals are a good investment as they can also transform into makeshift beds with fully reclining backrests and pullouts to accommodate unexpected guests.

For smaller homes or if you have just moved in, consider bringing in love seats and group them together to custom make your own seating arrangement. You can continue adding to the arrangement later if required.

When buying sectionals, invest in the pieces that will not crowd your space. Bigger homes with more walk around space can accommodate a curved sectional. But the L-shaped arrangement is ideal for smaller homes; understand which corner you wish to fill, then pick the LAF (left arm facing) sofa or RAF (right arm facing) sofa accordingly.

Tip: The market is inundated with brands that offer modular furniture that fit different budgets and tastes. Do your research and size up your living room before making the purchase.

The traditional linear sofa and corner sofa can all be combined into one arrangement as seen in this design by Patricia Urquiola for BEB Italia.

You’ll be spoilt for choice
A sofa set like the Osaka sofa for La Cividina is perfect for a loft area or a grand living room. Here, the steel frame holding the three strips is covered in ‘stretch’ fabric. The sofa can be configured as a straight line or in a convex or a concave curve. One can add more units to increase its length.
Famaliving San Diego
The Arianne by FamaLiving is simple and elegantly composed of pastel fabrics that work wonders in the room with white walls and no frills. The seating arrangement with the ottoman fits perfectly in the layout.

Roche Bobois’s Mah Jong sofa is vibrant with its quilt fabrics. An equally quirky wall mural, as shown in the image, works wonders with these exaggerated and colourful fabrics.

Low seats create an illusion of more space
The low seating modular sofas are practical as they create the illusion of more space and higher ceilings. Placed against the window, they offer better views of the outdoors too.

There are add-ons
The Evolution Eco Weave Sofa, which is a designer offshoot of a regular bean bag but resembles a comfortable chaise lounge, can complement a linear sofa arrangment.
Famaliving San Diego
Ottomans or poufs are perfect additions to a sectional. A two-toned sofa accompanied by an ottoman and matching cushions are a great way to add subtle variation and colour to your decor.

Out-of-the-pie is norm
When placing curved sectionals, the edges can be kept soft and curvy to maintain continuity in design. Here, the designers have dished out a custom made pie table with two slices as ottomans. This is ideal space saving furniture and it’s extremely innovative!

No corners mean no accidents
It is easier to navigate one’s way around the sofa and the ottoman without hurting one’s legs against the edges. Modular sofas are usually all cushioned or soft around the edges.
