When it comes to home accents, we mostly tend to gravitate towards pale colours or hues like reds and yellows. If you would like to make your home stand out, make it different from the rest, try working with the colour blue. It’s electric, rich, cool and calming! Use it to jazz up a corner wall; mix and match blue tiles for the flooring or upholster sofas with a lovely azure – it’s bound to add charm to your interiors. Take a look at some beautiful spaces for inspiration…
1. Tile tale
Contemporary floral blue tiles
visibly stand out in this tiny brown-dominated bathroom. As shown in the picture, without creating too stark a contrast, the blue-tiled wall helps create a harmonious interplay of warm and cool hues. The hanging lights add softness to the bathroom and lend it a cosy feel.

2. Pretty pots in a row
These cheery Santorini-styled cerulean-blue terracotta pots subtly spice up the dull white wall of a house. Such a line-up of pots is ideal when there’s a paucity of space to place plants. One can opt for a monochrome tone or use three different colours on the pots to create a happy ambience.
Tip: When choosing plants for potting, opt for succulents or the ‘bead’ variety that will grow in the sun and as well in the shade.

3. A blue backdrop
A wooden cobalt-blue board with cupboards at the bottom beautifully breaks the monotony of this large brown-and-white dining area. The use of blue is so apt that the room doesn’t need any extra furniture or giant curios to fill the space. The blue backdrop with open bronze shelves even doubles as a console to display small artefacts or tiny faux plants.
Tip: Instead of shelves, printed ikat fabric can be used on the board to create an ethnic look.

4. Spotlight effect
In a contemporary white Moroccan setting, the dash of Aegean and denim-blue paint on the false ceiling gives an exquisite edge to the drawing room. Since the ceiling makes such a dramatic statement in the centre of the room, all other elements like the sofas, the cylindrical white corner lamp and the stone-studded hanging lantern have been carefully chosen in subdued tones so that there is no clash of colour.
Tip: Instead of using paint on the false ceiling, one can put floral tiles in two different colours, and match the furniture around them.

5. A contrast of colours
Eleven circular ceramic plates of varying sizes in blue, mint green and soft grey create a pretty group on the corner wall without overcrowding it. As shown in the picture, the key is to pick an eye-catching shade of blue that matches your interiors and work the other colours around it.

6. For a bright corner
The dead end of a house has been ingeniously done up with admiral blue. Even though it has been used on a wall, in the outlines of the panels of a faux door on a wall painted in French vanilla, on the tiled flooring, and on the classic sinuous-legged console that has plants and a basket on it, blue gives the space a regal bearing. The white brick wall, the wooden shelves, the lights and the paintings add a touch of whimsy without disturbing its aura.

7. An oasis in teal
How many times have you wanted to convert a portion of your house into a cosy holiday shack? Take a cue from the picture that instantly transports one to the luxury beach houses of Goa. Teal weaves its magic with the textured wall, thatched roof and matching air-conditioner that blend in so well with the soft grey furnishings and artwork, transforming it into a contemporary chic outhouse with a lush garden view.

8. Dining in blue
As an extension of the living room, separated by an open-riser staircase, the dining area’s table, lapis-coloured chairs and sheer curtains brighten up the entire ambience without making it look too formal. Even though the interiors are predominantly white, cream and glass, the ‘shock’ of lapis teamed with lime-green pedestal candle holders and stunning hanging pendant lights lifts the space several notches.
