Planning a move in a couple years, and preferring to have no basement, less stuff to end up there. But what do you do when your kids have moved out, but have left stuff because they rent and aren’t living in a permanent place to accommodate all of it.

Don’t really want to move it, but it’s stuff that they will use in a few years once settled.

Any advice or suggestion, thank you

Leaving our last house, we were unsure exactly where or how we wanted to live. Living in our very small fifth wheel for six months made us realize how little we really needed to live contentedly. Sold/donated/trashed almost everything. Decided on a 1000sf condo which we gutted and furnished specifically for our new space. Still have a very small storage unit to store my husband’s beloved tools. It’s only a matter of time before he lets go of those...

Years ago, I was one of your kids...renting, with little storage space. My mother needed to move for work, and gave each of us adult children the option to get our own storage for the things we wanted to keep, or toss the unwanted items, as she could no longer store them for us. Most were tossed. as they were no longer needed/wanted. I'm going to do this same thing in a couple years when the kiddos finish grad school, because I am more than ready to downsize from a 6 bedroom house. They are adults now and need to be responsible for their own things and lives. Good luck!
