Shoe Storage Ideas For a Home's Entrance
Coming home – or visiting – becomes a much more pleasant experience when the shoes-off and shoes-on bit is made comfortable
There’s a funny – and long – debate in the comments section of a Houzz US story, Houzz Rule: Off With Your Shoes, which includes tips from the Emily Post Institute (the beacon of etiquette in the US) and lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, about wearing shoes indoors. Of course it’s no debate for us. We take off our shoes when we enter our homes, or our friends’ homes. It’s polite, and practical.
Fun foyer in Leonie Hill
With space for an actual foyer, this apartment ticks all the boxes: concealed shoe storage, a stool to sit on or put your foot up when tying shoe laces or strapping on buckles, and a full-length mirror for one last look at your outfit. Designed by CubE Associate Design, it makes you feel extra-polished with the metallic sheen on the wall finish and the gnome stool.

Well-screened in Boat Quay
It’s a bit tricky to create a foyer with space to store shoes when you’re highlighting an open-plan space. Design firm Versaform solved this dilemma by installing a timber screen, which physically separates the foyer from the living area, but visually allows it to remain part of the bigger space.

A bench on castor wheels makes it easy to put on or take off sneakers, helps to corral the shoes in one spot, and can be moved by the owners whenever they choose.

Self-contained in Punggol
Proj. B Studio‘s built-in cube of cabinets makes this entryway neat as a pin, with the storage containing clutter such as shoes, bags and brollies. A bench is built into the cube as well, set near the door, for easy access.

Warm and welcoming in Queenstown
Shoe storage is built into the bench of this foyer created by W2 Design. The apartment doesn’t really have a foyer; the placement of the bench and the screen attached to it creates a nook where the owners (and their guests) can transition from outdoors to indoors. Think of it as a decompression space before entering the home – the Zen ambience certainly encourages it!

A sweet touch in Sengkang
The 80’s Studio identifies the lotus brick divider, used to separate the foyer from the open-plan living-dining space, as one of the retro features of this HDB flat. They provided a wall-hung cabinet for shoes by the door – the space underneath can be used to air just-worn shoes before storing them.

Child-size garden chairs provide low-enough seating for putting on and taking off shoes.
Neat and nifty in Sengkang
For this four-room flat, The Local INN.terior incorporated the concept of ‘transition’ space from outside to indoors with a foyer that has different flooring from the rest of the interiors. Ample shoe storage is provided, and the bench also has a sculptural screen that visually separates the dining and living area from the entryway.

Hole-punched cabinet doors line the entry hallway of this apartment by Proj. B Studio. They look like a graphic treatment leading the eye into the living area – inside, they conceal shelves and shelves of shoes.

The holes allow the shoes to breathe – very important for leather – and also function as handles to open the cabinets.
Compact and complete in Kallang Bahru

Geometric in a contemporary condo
Capitalising on the odd configuration of this condominium, Living Gaia Interior designed built-in shelves and a bench with storage at the foyer. Backlighting emphasises the geometry of the design, while the soothing pale wood, white and grey palette softens its edginess.

Black-and-white chic in the foyer
While the initial attraction of this foyer by Design Intervention is its size – think how many pairs of shoes you can fit in (think of how many pairs of shoes there are!) – it’s the black and white tile pattern that makes a style statement here. A plush ottoman would have been nice for sitting on while you put on your shoes (or sitting on while you decide which shoes to wear)…

…but the full-length mirror definitely makes you feel glamorous in this foyer.
