Leonie, you seriously expect your neighbours to cut their trees to suit you? It probably makes their cooling bills lower due to the shade.

I don’t use a dryer I got a floor heating vent installed in my laundry so I dry clothes on a clothes drying rack over the vent I can close the laundry door when the heater is on and they dry fairly quickly. 3 teenage boys 2 adults I do 4 loads of laundry a day - 2 loads in the morning 2 at night. I don’t run the central heating all day it’s on a timer in the morning and in the evening - central heating is needed in cold Canberra

I grew up in a house that had one gas heater in the lounge room and the rest of the house was freezing. We would huddle under the blankets to sleep and get in and out of the bathroom as quickly as possible. I hate everything about the idea of 'just heat the room that you are using' and close off all of the doors! I have proved, with a reduction in our power bills, that it is significantly cheaper to keep the whole home at a consistent temperature rather than turning the heating off and on. We use heated throws and electric blankets (and an occasional hot water bottle) to make up the difference in chilly parts of the house rather than turning up the thermostat when someone feels a bit cold.
