Originally from a small town in Maharashtra, the homeowners of this Pune apartment were in search of an aesthetic that straddled small-town rusticity and modish flair. “They had been living in Pune for many years and had recently bought this apartment in a posh locality. For this home, they wished for something colourful and functional, and yet, something that reminded them of their roots. The rustic canvas allows for furniture and accessories in a variety of colours to happily coexist,” says Shrutika Raut, founder and chief interior designer of shrutika.raut.design.studio.

The living room perpetuates the foyer’s aesthetic with terracotta brick walls, arched doorways and vanilla-and-grey palette. The furniture scheme is a muted counterbalance to the textured, patterned shell.
“Raw, warm and natural were the obvious choice of qualities for materials to bring the client’s and the architect’s vision to life. The palette features handcrafted cement tiles, microcement, terracotta brick and teak wood,” says Raut.

In the dining room, snow-white panels and rafters define the ceiling, while the white wood dining table and chairs steal the spotlight with their distressed finish and country-chic carvings.
“The living and dining areas get ample sunlight and ventilation, thanks to their east–west orientation. It’s subtle yet warm. The custom-made Pichwai paintings serve as charming accents in the dining area,” notes Raut.

The open-plan kitchen is situated beside the dining room. It has a unique visual identity with buttercup-yellow cabinets, oak-toned under-counter units and a green cement tile floor. The daisy backsplash holds a mirror to the dining room palette.
A basin stands a few feet away from the dining area, providing easy access at mealtimes.
A terracotta and beige wall poses as the highlight of the master bedroom, while a stately teak-wood bed forms the centrepiece of the furniture scheme. The floor features trad grey cement tiles. White louvred wardrobes frame the room to the left, providing a serene offset to the surrounding darkness.

White and wood tones, and fluted glass cabinets define the kids’ bedroom. Colourful cement floor tiles give the room a playful spin.
The third bedroom was converted into a multipurpose space. Sage walls and a patterned pewter-toned floor conjure a calming ambience. A touch of boldness is provided by the crimson sofas.
“We demolished the walls of the guest bedroom and turned it into a multipurpose room. It now features a retractable glass partition that lets it become a seamless extension of the living room,” concludes Raut.
