The homeowners’ only brief to architects Nishtha Duggal and Rohan Gera, co-founders and principal architects at The Concreate Story, was to design a home that has “more colour and is less modern”. The homeowner, an art connoisseur, wanted the decor to accentuate handcrafted and vernacular elements. Adhering to this brief, the architects conceptualised the apartment around dastakari or craftsmanship, where every piece of furniture and detail is handmade.

“We decided to go with rose sandstone for the cladding as it would have brought out just the character we were looking for,” says Gera. An antique carved wood idol of Saraswati hangs in a niche, framed by a hand-painted vine, with earthen pots at its feet. The hand-painted white door gets an extra touch of personality from its customised iron embellishments.

On the right side of the entrance is the study in various shades of red. In the original house plan, this space served as the household help’s quarters with a utility area at the back. The architects broke down the wall to amalgamate the study with the living room. A terracotta ikat wallpaper and chevron rug create an interesting interplay of patterns. A study table in distress finish and arched bookshelves with glass-paned shutters infuse the decor with an old-world charm.
The passage leads to the living room where a 9-foot tufted olive-green sofa takes centre stage with a large pattachitra as the backdrop. Two carved side tables with lamps flank the sofa and bring in subtle opulence. An Aubusson carpet anchors the round carved teak table and a pendant chandelier. An Aubusson is a carpet or rug handwoven in Aubusson or Felletin in central France.

The living room corner is occupied by a diagonally placed teak-frame wicker sofa made in the style of Louis chairs. The mustard wallpaper and brass leaf lights, a traveller’s palm and the sheer drapes lend a tropical vibe to this spot.
Massive antique-finish ivory armchairs tie the look together.

“The formal living area and the lounge are separated by a tall carved teak pillar, “the hero of the space,” Duggal says. With vernacular todis (brackets) lining the ceiling it holds up, “the pillar is a testament to dastakari in its most honest form,” says Duggal. “The exquisite wooden pillar is the focal point of this area and is inspired by Dravidian times, considering the homeowners’ passion for vernacular decor.”
The lounge wall extends to the dining room where three mask artefacts bring in drama. Brass hanging lights above the table imbue a touch of industrial decor. The warm woody hues from the chairs, some rattan backed and the rest upholstered, offset the grey spindle legs of the dining table. Fluted glass doors seamlessly connect the kitchen to the dining area. The wall adjacent to the doors has a hand-carved open mandir with a Thanjavur (Tanjore) painting.
In the kitchen, antique-style hand-painted cabinets impart a one-of-a-kind finish to the space. A rare glass tile backsplash cloaks the wall. Vines draped casually on the chimney duct emerging from the cabinet lend a burst of freshness to an otherwise subdued space.
Further down the corridor is the spacious master bedroom. The architects broke down two separate bedrooms and a bathroom in between to make one master bedroom.
“A 360-degree rotating TV unit in the centre was consciously finished in black and white to finely demarcate the seating and the bedroom zones. Brass inlay against a charcoal-black floor brings in the subtle eccentricity we were looking at. The bed and the lounger are finished in fine cane wicker detail, with a rustic raw white background. The fluted side lamps add to the understated sides,” says Gera.

Natural light from the window brightens up the ambience. Textured paint on the wall behind the bed and exposed beams on the ceiling bring in a touch of rusticity. Turquoise is the ruling hue of the palette set by the bedspread, picked up in the striped niches flanking the wicker bed and in the sofa beneath the window.

In the master bathroom, shaded tiles laid in a diamond pattern draw visual interest. The tiles were deliberately highlighted with a black grout to exude an earthy vibe. An onyx countertop imbues a sense of luxury.
Just a few steps from the home’s entrance is the daughter’s bedroom with a pastel colour scheme designed to meet her future requirements. A teal spindle-rail headboard and yellow side table inject pops of colour. The neutral terrazzo flooring, ribbed teak chair and sheer mulmul (muslin) curtains imbue a European charm. A metallic blue wallpaper on the ceiling adds to the drama.
“The parents’ bedroom is elegantly dressed in shades of white. A tactile ikat wallpaper, along with the square panels, adds texture to the room. The bed back has a flowy silhouette which is contrasted with bright yellow bed linen, scattering abundant natural light in the room,” says Duggal.
