Mumbai Houzz: There Is a Lightness of Touch Here in This Flat
Pastel hues and a minimalistic sophistication pervades this home designed by CanvasInc Architecture
The brief given to Bijal Chawda, founder and principal designer of CanvasInc Architecture Interiors was simple. The homeowners wanted a minimalistic and unique look for their home without breaking the bank on the interiors.
The adjoining dining area has a bespoke teak dining table, and matching set of chairs and a bench. A pastel-green wall with elegant moulding lends a burst of freshness to this space. White walls serve as a blank canvas to display artworks.

The slim dark console near the dining table, the round mirror and the plants form a vignette, giving character to the dining area. Recessed spotlights accentuate and balance the two neighbouring spots.

The living room’s sliding doors open onto a balcony roofed with striped awning and furnished with a couple of wooden chairs and a coffee table next to a few planters. The mother’s love for gardening is evident from all the potted plants scattered about the home.
A passageway lined with travel souvenirs and artefacts leads to the bedrooms. Trailing greenery and pendant lights give character to the passage.
The room on the left of the passage is the mother’s bedroom. The bespoke sofa-cum-bed has a tufted headboard flanked with wooden spindle posts. While pale grey and white predominate, the planters, pops of yellow on the mural and the natural light from the expansive window give a sun-kissed vibe to the room.

The wardrobe continues the grey theme with a dash of bright brown from a set of teak shutters. The foot of the bed reiterates the theme, being grey with delicate teak moulding. The faux ceiling with track lights adds to the ambience.
At the end of the passage is the master bedroom, which provides continuity to the minimalist design narrative with the bed, wardrobe and dresser. Deep-blue paint on the bottom half and a plaid-print wallpaper on the top half bedecks the wall behind the bed. Neat moulding in white segregates the two.
The floor-to-ceiling wardrobe in mocha offers storage. Curtains behind the glass shutters shield from view what is inside and add a subtle tactile touch. Nestled next to the wardrobe is a compact dresser with mirror.

As one enters the apartment, on the right side is the living area which has been designed as a calm and a soothing space. Upholstered in velvety pastel pink, a Lawson sofa steals the show here. A table with planters and a metallic pendant light flank one side of the sofa. Hanging above the couch are artworks collected by the homeowner over the years. A muted rug anchors the wooden coffee table. The open-shelved TV wall unit offers added storage.
“All the furniture pieces in the house are custom-made as per the requirements of the owners,” says Chawda.
