Five people live in this Mumbai flat, so Bhumika Patel and Chintan Patel, founders and Principal Architects, Limited Edition Design Studio, needed to sculpt a home that was modern and warm, with enough storage for everyone. “Our client spends a lot of time at the office. He wanted his home to be welcoming, relaxing and full of character,” says Chintan. “For his wife and mother, ample storage was a big necessity while the teenage sons wanted a room that was youthful, unique and timeless.”

The entrance of the home flows into an open-plan living and dining room with a kitchen tucked away behind a partition of metal rods. A short passage leads to the three bedrooms. “We used this passage and the length of the living room to our advantage,” Chintan explains, “and created a linear ceiling which acts as a visual passageway, giving the illusion of an extended space.” The console mirror not only demarcates the entrance area but also adds depth to this elongated visual.

Beige and grey dominate the living space, with teak wood infusing warmth to the palette. A large L-shaped sofa adds enough seating without being in the way, while a sleek wood-and-brass swing partitions the seating area from the dining room.
The architects brought in a few gold highlights, such as brass wall planters, curios and floor lamp, to add drama to the neutral colour scheme. Track and recessed lights keep the room well illuminated, and the two-level coffee table and textured rug add interest.

The architects saved space in the dining area by fitting in a sleek table with a glass top and marble legs, flanked by chairs on one side and a built-in bench on the other. “We used back-painted glass on the wall behind to add depth by its reflective nature,” says Bhumika. The blue fabric ceiling lights take the design up a notch.

Across from the seating area is the TV unit. The panelling is finished in Armani veneer and Piatra grey marble. Slim metal rods in plum partition this space from the kitchen. This keeps the kitchen partially hidden without breaking the visual connection and makes the room look bigger.
In the kitchen, back-painted acrylic shutters on the cabinetry add to the reflective surfaces. A backsplash was created from Statuario tile, coupled with a quartz platform.
The couple’s master bedroom features a neutral colour scheme with a balance of dark and light niches to add interest to the monotone palette. “For the doors of the wardrobe, we used back-painted glass to complement the veneer finishes in the room,” Bhumika says. The custom-made matte brass door handles were used to bring in a layer of luxury. The architects maximised storage in each bedroom by making use of full-height wardrobes and beds with built-in compartments. The TV units and dressing tables also feature discreet storage.

The monotone room is suffused with character, a distinctive feature being the headboard and wall behind it. “We designed a mix of 3D panelling on the whole wall and flat panelling for the headboard. The multifaceted backdrop is elevated by soft lighting from the glass pendant lamp,” the architect says.
“For me, the most interesting room in the house is the sons’ bedroom,” says Chintan. “Both the concept and the colour scheme have a unique charm, one that is timeless because it appeals to teenagers and adults alike.” The room features a sleek mix of luxury and youth – classic black croc leather uplifted by geometric brass highlights and swathes of matte olive green.
To open up the room, the architects created a low streamlined suede bed and pale-grey side tables. Clean, simple lines make the room look bigger, while the floor-to-ceiling wardrobe draws the eye upward and adds discreet storage.
“This room was crafted keeping her eclectic personality and favourite colour in mind,” explains Bhumika of the grandmother’s bedroom. A brilliant peacock-blue wardrobe with a scallop pattern dominates the space. The custom-made beaten brass door handles feature the same scallop pattern, enhancing and elevating the design. To balance this, the architects toned down the rest of the room with a muted colour palette.
The wall behind the bed features a matte veneer finish that extends to the bathroom door. “Gold is often used in this room for accent points,” Bhumika says, “and we used a brown-and-tan double-headboard in suede, custom agate drawer pulls on the side tables and a beautiful pendant light from Objects of Interest to add a luxe feel to the room.”
Adding a layer of interest to the bathroom are the off-white-and-gold motif wall tiles, complemented by the matte grey flooring tiles that feature subtle visual texture. Brass detailing to the vanity and shower areas by way of the faucets, fixtures and mirror, impart a touch of drama to the muted palette.
