Mumbai Houzz: It's All About Pastel Hues & Subtle Sophisticatication
A restrained colour palette, clean-lined furniture and accent artworks make spaces shine in this quaint, modern house
The clients, a young couple and their six-year-old son, wanted a home that was minimal and easy to maintain. With this in mind, the designers at loc design house opted for a soft colour palette that flows subtly through a large part of the house, which is in Vadala. “We completed it within the stipulated budget without any compromise on the look and feel of the home,” says lead designer Manmeet Arora.
The passage opens into a living room. It features minimal furniture, with a tufted L-shaped sofa as the focal point. The combination of wallpaper and lime-plaster finish gives the walls a one-of-a-kind look. Works by renowned photographers adorn the wall, and a custom-made light by Arjun Rathi.

Beige marble flooring has been used across the living area. “The clients gave us complete freedom to choose every accessory. We selected them based on the budget, colour scheme and concept.”

Between the dining area and the wood-panelled bar wall are two doors, which seem part of the panelling, leading to the guest room and the master bedroom.
The dining area is on the right of the space, and kitchen on the extreme right. A half-glass door partitions the kitchen from the rest of living space. Grey cement counters offset the white subway tiles and give the kitchen a smart urban vibe.

The cosy dining space tucked away in the corner has an L-shaped veneer bench with pastel cushions, complementing the colour palette of the house. “The hanging dome light and the grey artwork create visual interest and tie the colour scheme together,” says Arora.

Behind the bar wall is the son’s bedroom. “It has a wooden floor with a neutral palette and a navy-blue fabric upholstered bed,” adds Arora. As requested by their 6-year-old client, the designers also introduced a super-hero theme and dotted the area with Batman and similar artworks. Super, indeed!

“Reflective surfaces were used to create an illusion of space, such as tinted mirrors on the wardrobes,” says Arora. In the son’s bedroom, the minimalist theme is reinforced with a floating study table.

“The master bedroom is partly divided with a partition consisting of a suspended mirror and book shelf demarcating the dressing and sleeping spaces. The back of the mirror is turned towards the bed and is covered by a customised artwork that sets a serene mood, along with the grey lime-plastered walls,” Arora says.
Arora feels the master bedroom is the most interesting room in this house. She says this room with stucco walls exudes a cosy vibe. “It is meant to transport one to a tranquil place,” she says.
