This apartment was designed for a newly married couple that was keen on incorporating a kaleidoscope of colours, patterns and prints into their home. “The apartment had been locked for a long time, which had resulted in numerous leakages, cracks in the plaster and discolouration of tiles. We carried out extensive civil work to reverse the damage and re-plaster the entire home. The apartment was designed as an open and inviting space which made the most of the sea view. We were able to rise above the challenges posed by the condition of the original home and create a happy, vibrant escape that fulfilled the vision of the couple,” says Chaitali Parikh, founder and chief design architect of Inscape Designers.

The living room is a kaleidoscope of eye-catching colours. It features a customised L-shaped sofa and upholstered armchairs in Bohemian prints. An antique wooden coffee table, its top paved with old wooden printing blocks, serves as the centrepiece, while a collection of antique family treasures – including a telescope, a manual camera and a metal statuette of Goddess Parvati – is displayed around the room. Standing masks from Bali and Thailand occupy the table on the left.
Parikh reveals that there was a method to the madness when it came to furnishing the space, citing the example of the black-and-white sofa. “While one half of the long monochrome-printed sofa serves to offset the brick-red wall, the other helps camouflage a protruding wall column embellished with exposed bricks. We used furniture and concealed lighting to mask unsightly beams and pipes,” she says.

“The furniture, fabrics, materials and finishes were jointly selected by the clients and us. They were very hands-on and had a definite vision for their home. And while we were initially apprehensive about the excessive use of colours and prints, we were successful in creating an end product with a peppy, positive spirit,” says Parikh.

A passage connects the living room to the dining room, the chevron wooden flooring providing continuity between the two spaces.
“A customised built-in, two-way bookshelf unit separates the living and dining rooms, while also visually binding them together through shadow-box-style windows. The unit also helps hide the floating column between the two areas. The shelves were hand-painted in primary colours to amplify the home’s graphic aesthetic,” says Parikh.

The dining area consists of a solid reclaimed teakwood dining table and four dining chairs. A customised red dinette, finished in a crackled paint effect, adds a cheery pop of colour to the space, while a metal spoked-wheel light installation gives the room an industrial retro edge. The chevron wallpaper is a subtle nod to the choice of wooden flooring.
“The eclectic design reflects the couple’s vibrant personalities,” says Parikh.

The kitchen backsplash is made of ceramic tiles in a spectrum of warm hues. Calming monotone overhead cabinets and distressed lower cabinets cure the busy wall aesthetic.
The master bedroom channels island vibes. The quilted wall-mounted headboard is upholstered in a blue-and-white tie-and-dye fabric that sets the room’s dominant palette. The window blinds on either side of the bed feature a bold recurrent motif in blue and black.
The wall opposite the bed hosts floor-to-ceiling sliding-door wardrobes that visually augment the height of the room.

The walls and floor of the master bathroom are enveloped in blue-and-white Spanish ceramic tiles.
“The basin area breaks away from the Mediterranean aesthetic with bluish-grey tiles that serve to highlight the handmade floral-printed ceramic basin,” says Parikh.

The guest bedroom is outfitted in serene blues and greens that channel attention to the grunge-style wooden flooring. A printed tufted headboard adds colour and character to the otherwise pared-back space.

The guest bathroom continues the homeowners’ love for printed tiles.
“The tiles were selected together with the client. We complemented the tiles with a hand-painted mirror frame and added an industrial light for a quirky touch,” says Parikh.

“For the flooring, the clients wanted a warm, wooden look. We employed an assortment of wooden laminate designs throughout the house, and fitted the panels directly on top of the original floor tiles,” says Parikh.
