Mumbai Houzz: A Contemporary Home With a Twist
The contemporary interiors of this home by Studio Wodehouse get a lift with traditional artefacts and elements
The homeowners were open to fresh ideas and design layouts. So, Shonali Mahajan, creative director and founder of interiors firm Studio Wodehouse, suggested a blend of contemporary decor with touches of antiquity, which the homeowners liked. The end result – a warm and inviting apartment punctuated with bold, ethnic artefacts and personal touches.
A bold turquoise-blue sofa with velvet upholstery immediately catches the eye. The understated colour palette of grey walls and muted marble flooring plays against the whimsical hues of the sofa.

This corner is a confluence of traditional and modern. While an ethnic artefact adds depth of character to the space, the modish chair, sleek table and bottle-green vase bring in vibrancy and style.

Modern meets traditional in this dining room with clean-lined wooden furniture, gleaming marble panels and a rustic stone finish. The earthy tones of sienna beautifully contrast the neutral greys and bold blacks. A ribbed-glass sliding door partitions the area from the kitchen while maintaining a sense of uninterrupted flow.
Exquisite art pieces – such as the dramatic textures of the Naga tribal panel in earthy colours – flank the walls and become the focal point of this space. A series of sculptural heads along the dark wall on the other side of the dining area underscore these mellow hues further and give continuity to the decor.

In the kitchen pale-green and beige wooden laminate panels radiate pleasant calm. Deep-blue and ivory patterned tiles add a theatrical touch. Textured white subway tiles on the backsplash complement the glossy quartz counter.
The focal point of the master bedroom is the accent wall behind the bed. Bathed in cool shades of grey, blue and green, it conjures a tranquil and serene ambience. Black and gold shelves juxtaposed with the crème and gold wallpaper add to the elegant ambience.
“The room’s aesthetic is accentuated with tasteful gold finishes and organic fabrics. All the furniture is custom made and the bed stands out with a blue headboard,” says Mahajan.
“The master bathroom originally housed a bathtub and a separate shower area which the homeowners didn’t care much for. We got rid of the tub and replaced that space with a dresser and some storage for a walk-in experience while maintaining the shower area. This definitely made the bathroom feel much more luxurious and spacious while fulfilling the clients’ needs,” says Mahajan.
The grandmother’s room is painted in muted tones of white and cream. To maximise space, the designer opted for a sliding-door wardrobe with lacquered wallpaper.

The playroom wears a pale-grey palette with splashes of vivid orange and blue. “It’s designed with a raised platform to maximise storage for the kids. Equipped with child-friendly surfaces and materials, this room stands out for its experimental monkey bars and quirky fabrics,” Mahajan says.

A honey-coloured pinewood floor and wooden furniture set up a warm and cosy children’s bedroom. Bunk beds optimise vertical space, with plenty of room for study tables underneath. The sublime blue-and-white wallpaper breaks the monotony of the neutral undertones.
