The design vocabulary for this residential project, a twentieth-floor apartment on Malabar Hill, was set to the rhythm of the tides outside.
“It came to us as we stood by the living-room window and soaked in the glorious view of the Arabian Sea. We were instinctively driven to capture the contradictory tranquil and energetic nature of the sea. In terms of style, the clients preferred the contemporary design form, and while they loved entertaining, they were building a home for themselves and their children – not for others to see. From that point on, they left the canvas open for us to interpret, with the exception of requesting us to include colour in the home,” says Esha Pandya-Choksi, one half of Mumbai-based interior design firm Studio Flamingo.
Adds Aashni Pandya-Kumar, co-founder with Pandya-Choksi and the other half of Studio Flamingo, “In line with this thought, the contemporary interiors, clean furniture lines and uncluttered spatial planning were challenged by the emergence of dynamic patterns, inspired by the study of wave undulations. The clients’ requirement of infusing colours into the home served our concept well – a representation of yellows, blues, greens and reds clashing against a neutral shore.”

The dining table and chairs, made of natural wood and metal, are backgrounded by a sweeping light-toned book unit. A dark wood grain defines the adjacent walls, giving the dining room an ebony-and-ivory finish.
“The book unit reflects the clients’ love for reading. We used a wide variety of materials for the home – from marble, wood and veneer to fabric and metal sheets – many of which can be seen here. Against this backdrop of diversity, we paid close attention to ensuring that the manner in which these materials were used in every room was cohesive and created an energetic yet harmonious rhythm, much like the ocean outside. This technique not only seemingly increased the volume of the space, but also brought a sense of calm to the home, conjuring a hushed oasis in an otherwise chaotic city,” says Pandya-Kumar.

Adjoining the living room is a wood-clad bar. Its shadow-box-like shutters play host to an array of collectible shot glasses.
“As we journeyed with our clients, we discovered their penchant for travel. They had a family tradition of collecting shot glasses and artefacts from their travels all over the world,” notes Pandya-Choksi.

The den, meant for lazy evenings in front of the TV, lies beyond the dining room. A sable sofa provides seating here.
“The multitasking ability of spaces and furniture is the gold standard that a designer often aims for while designing a home in Mumbai. We are happy to have achieved that in this den, which effortlessly converts into a home study, guest bedroom or an extension to the living room,” says Pandya-Kumar.

A backsplash of handcrafted black-and-white mosaic tiles is the focal point of the kitchen. The shutters, sporting facades of grey laminate below and yellow paint above, provide a subtle offset to the monochrome tiles.

The master bedroom features a dramatic headboard that rises to the ceiling. The shuttered wardrobes wear a light timber grain.
“The headboard is a combination of marble cladding and leather upholstery. Also, the master bedroom is enveloped by windows on three sides, channelling the impression of being aboard a ship,” says Pandya-Choksi.

The master bathroom is characterised by taupe floor-to-ceiling tiles and a monochrome floor.
The kids’ bedroom nods to the family’s travel adventures. A wall covered with a custom world map serves as a backdrop to the bed. A sleek desk in wood and white flanks the bed to the right.
“The map was designed to encourage the kids to pin photos and souvenirs against all the places they have visited around the world,” says Pandya-Choksi.

The kids’ bathroom is a potpourri of colour. The white-and-grey scheme is punctuated by a shiny silver sink. On the opposite side, a vibrant mosaic wall of handmade ceramic tiles highlights the shower area.
“The mosaic is inspired by a Piet Mondrian painting,” Pandya-Kumar says.

“The room boasts a fantastic audio-visual surround-sound system that pays homage to the clients’ musical affinities,” says Pandya-Choksi. Elaborates Pandya-Kumar, “We played with various materials to create an experimental, contemporary look. If you look closely at the book unit or the stone-backdrop wall of the sofa, you will observe energetic wave patterns which capture the dual nature of the Arabian Sea beyond.”
