When Kayzad Shroffās cousin approached him to revive his two-bedroom apartment, the co-founder and chief interior designer of SHROFFLEĆ³N found the brief open to interpretation.
āKayzad and his cousin share a special bond, and the high level of trust translated into us earning carte blanche over the design process. The need was straightforward: to modernise the existing home. The building is about 50-60 years old. For some reason, all the walls are made of concrete. Thus, we were challenged with the fact that the majority of walls were unmovable. While the new wall layout is similar to the original, the programmatic distribution is completely different,ā says Maria Leon, chief interior designer and co-founder with Shroff.

On the wall opposite, a minimalist open shelving system acts as the focal point of the living room, concealing a television unit underneath. Its fumed chestnut veneer offsets the fluid patterns of the dark marble backdrop.

The dining area serves as an extension of the living room, perpetuating its timber and black-ash palette. A light-toned dining table takes centre stage, flanked by sable chairs on either side. A contemporary pendant-style chandelier illuminates the setting, matching the length of the table.

āWhat we did do was break down the one non-structural wall, and reorient the home completely. We swapped the locations of the kitchen and master bedroom,ā notes Shroff.
The master bedroom is dominated by terrazzo and marble through its flooring and wall embellishments. A lightweight frame bookshelf occupies the wall opposite the bed, while a sleek desk fits along the wall between the door and wardobe, with open shelves above and on the side.
Bedroom furnishings: Flos, Buster + Punch, Anderson; curtains: Sarita Handa

With its floor and walls cloaked in terrazzo, the master bathroom earns warmth from its wood-veneer vanity.
The balcony had previously been absorbed to make a home office and a room for the domestic staff. These rooms disappeared, transformed into a sweeping deck connecting the two adjoining bedrooms. The deck is enlivened by a trellis, a stretch of turf and wooden window slats.

The guest bedroom double-hats as a workstation.
āWith the majority of the walls being shear, the opportunity for intervention was severely limited. Careful and strategic reworking of the existing layout resulted in positioning the two bedrooms side by side, while keeping the balcony common,ā Leon says.

āThe home hosts a dominant material palette of white terrazzo (for the floors), and veneers in black ash and fumed larch,ā Shroff says. āThis singular palette ties the varied elements together.ā
