There is so much more to this story! With hundreds of different plywoods ( say 30 different 3/4" maple plywoods available at a local supplier) prefinished, veneer core, MDF core, cross band, 5 ply, 7 ply, imported, termite resistant glue treated, domestic, CARB compliant....the list goes on and on. Factor in the many of different veneers on plywood and you will see that there is an option for every application. Unless it is for a painted finish.

MDF is not an ideal choice for cabinet interiors as it is not structural. However, for a paint grade door, a homeowner should not be thinking this is anything like the dread ' particle board' . We use Medex ( which is an exterior grade MDF) for our paint grade doors. Firstly, because it is used by exterior sign makers and is very durable in wet, humid, hot conditions. It does not swell or sag. Secondly, the super smooth surface allows us car finish results that can even be buffed out like a car. It is heavier, but can be cut on a CNC or even a wet jet, with no swelling. The panel of this door was cut with water:

I don't think it is an issue when MDF is used in interior work. Laminated MDF is best with open edges fixed with liners. It can also be used in kitchen area when the bottom edge is attached with wooden reapers for about 1/2 to 3/4 inch to prevent ingress of floor water.
