A built-in sofa can add a level of customisation that truly elevates a home. By integrating sofas into hallways, wall alcoves, bookshelves and more, these designers created sofas that make the most of every square inch while complementing the style of the space. Take inspiration from these 8 built-in sofas and let us know in the Comments which one you’d like to curl up in most.

1. Literary loft
Designer Jessica Helgerson and her architect husband, Yianni Doulis, designed the two built-in sofas in the living room of their home in Sauvie Island, Oregon. The sofas double as twin beds for guests. A walnut ladder leads up to the couple’s bedroom loft and lets them reach books on the upper shelves.

2. Alluring alcove
The design team at Chimera Interiors lined an alcove wall in this Los Angeles family room in walnut veneer. The bottom of the alcove features a built-in sofa flanked by bookshelves that double as end tables.

5. Modern magic
A custom built-in sectional serves as a replacement for a space-sucking sofa or armchairs in this modern home in Stinson Beach, California, designed by WA Design Architects. The plush leather cushions hug the wall, allowing the living room to feel open and light.

6. Cool and curvaceous
Architect Wanda Ely says that within the relatively compact living room in this Toronto home, a variety of activities are accommodated by the uniquely curved built-in sectional that lines three walls. The sectional depth varies to allow for conversations, listening to music, lounging, reading and napping.

Troy Cabinetmakers
7. Wraparound wonder
The woodworkers at Troy Cabinetmakers created a large built-in sectional for this rustic living room in Boston. Because of the room’s dark wood ceiling and light wood walls, the base of the built-in is white painted wood to keep the space from feeling too dark. The sofa cushions are covered in a sage-green corduroy.
Town and Country Gardens
8. Patio pleaser
This rooftop garden in London, designed by Town and Country Gardens, features a built-in sectional that hugs a wall of planter boxes. The tall grass and grapevine pruned to resemble a tree make the urban garden that’s mostly hardscape seem greener and softer.
