At least two-thirds of the time I was unable to decide how an illustration related to the text around it.

I'll try your advice, but if it's that necessary for an optimal experience with the piece, people probably deserve to be told about it. The thing about interface is that once you've used it a few times you don't notice the problems with it so much, but you run the risk of losing a lot of first-time viewers who don't have the benefit of your experience. Telling people (or making the article view, which I'm using, good enough that it doesn't require special tactics) might not be convenient, but -- understandably -- I'm thinking about the convenience of the viewer, not the person responsible for the layout. Thanks for the tips, though; I know I'm not the only person who can use them.
