I came to this story because we have just purchased a home with a galley kitchen. I always read the comments, and I don't think I've ever read so many positive reactions; not just for the "look" but for the functionality. My parents mid-1950s ranch had a galley kitchen, so our "new" kitchen makes the house already feel like "home." My one criticism of this story is that there are no hard numbers. In the first item, Assess Your Space, there are only comparative terms: small space, medium-sized kitchens, opposing runs too far apart, (This kitchen gets it right.) These terms aren't helpful, as the number of queries about dimensions show. Otherwise, great article.

My galley kitchen is in the center of out house, so, no window, and open at both ends. I've always felt it was dark, cut off from everyone in the house, and didn't have enough

uninterupted counter space. Sink and stove are on opposite walls directly in the center of each. I have called it a "one butt" kitchen for years! I'd love to do some remodelling but don't know how to make it all work.

Several of the condos where I live have resolved this issue by removing part of the wall separating the kitchen from the living room, adding a few bar stools on the living room side.
