It is not easy to accommodate a growing family’s requirements without compromising on walkable carpet space in the house. One can invest in modular pieces that can be added or eliminated; one can also custom-create shelves or use other innovative hacks to increase storage in the house. Here are some creative ways to keep clutter at bay.
Reconfigurable modular cabinets
Conventional modular cabinets are extremely popular with homeowners as they can be unhinged, rearranged and reconfigured. They are easily added to existing wall units to create more shelf space.

These adjustable cabinet systems are great for a family’s growing storage needs. When clustered together, they can also be made into wall compositions to fit into any room’s design theme.
Colour coded boxes for kids
Freestanding or built-in coloured modular wood shelving units are playful and practical. They’re great for providing access to toys while teaching kids to keep their room organised.

With colour-coded, labelled or numbered containers slotted into an open shelf unit like this one, the tiny bits and pieces needed for the baby won’t get lost in large drawers.
Tip: An ottoman with a flip-top lid holds extra blankets, toys and less frequently used items.

Pull-out shelves and retractable units
Bring in a retractable unit that can be closed and packed up when not in use. It eliminates the need to purchase elaborate desks that take up a lot of space.

Similarly, a smaller storage cabinet with a wood-finish top that slides out from under your kitchen platform can double as a cutting board or work surface when the main kitchen counter is busy.
This custom pantry with a pull-out landing area and cart is a must-have for tiny apartments where investing in a full-blown pantry area may seem like a waste of space.
Tip: Bathrooms can benefit from pull-out shelves and under-sink storage. Clean towels, bathroom supplies and even a laundry basket, all stashed away within easy access, can help create the perfect bathroom.

Bookshelves as room dividers
If you are interested in displaying your books but don’t have space for a library unit, then install a book shelf in the room that also doubles as a room divider.

An open shelving unit will allow light to pass through and will make a great substitute for box-like book cabinets.
Makeshift storage bins
These can be brought into garages, kitchens or storerooms. Hook trays and buckets on to the wall to hold rain gear, umbrellas, shoes, towels, rags, utensils and more.

Floating wall units
Nothing creates the illusion of space better than wall-mounted furniture. In this picture, the bed and shelves are raised off the floor to create a sense of airy spaciousness.

Similarly, a floating vanity gives more floor space in the bathroom. These modular fittings look extremely sleek and can keep all your knick-knacks within easy reach.
A pegboard wall
A clear worktop aids creativity. In this picture, the sewing station has threads and fabrics in containers pinned on the pegboard while leaving the table clear of too many distractions. Similarly, it can be used to hang anything from jewellery to work tools, depending on your need.

You can also organise kitchen utensils by placing them on a pegboard wall. Besides being easy to reach, the organised vessels will create an interesting feature wall in the kitchen.
It is also ideal for a nursery where the pegboard can be used to hang artworks, soft toys, towels, napkins, baby-bottle racks, etc.
