Ingenious Ways in Which Book Racks Can Divide a Space
Move your book rack away from the wall and discover the many ways it can take up the role of a partition
Where have you placed your book rack? Next to one of the walls in your study, hung on a wall in your living room or fitted in a large cubby hole? What if I tell you that your book rack can do more than just stand in a corner and house your collection of tomes? Book racks and shelves can also take up the role of dividers in your room. They can beautifully separate two areas in your house by standing as the partition. Here are some great ideas that will inspire you to give your book racks a new role in your home.
A bookshelf in white divides the floor space and works as one of the walls in this pretty living area. The unit, with open shelves of different sizes and a set of drawers, extends from the floor to the ceiling but maintains a feel of spaciousness in the area.
If you want separate areas in an open floor plan without losing the sense of openness, take a hint from this house. A stack of wooden bookshelves installed between two brick pillars work as a partition between the dining space and the stairs. It makes a boundary between the two areas but doesn’t block the view.
On the other hand, you can also use it to close off spaces. Here, a white book rack fills up the space between the main wall and the brick wall at the end of the stairs.
An uber-cool monochrome space is divided into a living room and a reading space by a standalone bookshelf of glass and steel.
One side of the bookshelf has been covered with darker glass and acts as a wall for the living area.
An inverted-L-shaped book rack segregates spaces in this vibrant living room. The colours of the rack complement the setting; the lower half is white like the lounge sofa next to it while the shimmery grey on the top resonates with the grey stone of the wall next to it.
Here large book racks form two walls of a partially open floor plan. The shelves are used to mark off the kitchen space. The square floor-to-ceiling one hides the cooking station while the L-shaped one on the left forms the outline of the booth dining table.
Sometimes a strategically placed small piece of furniture is enough to create two separate areas in a room. A lounging corner becomes a bonafide space in this large living room, all thanks to the dark wood coffee table cum bookcase. A slim TV placed on top completes the lounge setup.
Book racks can create private corners in a shared space. The two racks with open shelving smartly divide this study room providing each of the children with their own space. Their sizes are just right as they take up enough space – in length and height – without overpowering the room.
