Every new year brings with it fresh ideas, plans and perspectives; it gives one the motivation to do something different. For enthusiastic home owners, this translates into an opportunity to dress up the home differently – to give it a touch of ‘newness’. We got in touch with seven experts from the field – Adetee Sawhaney of Altus - Luxury Living, Karishma Bajaj of Red Blue & Yellow, Chanya Kaur of The Pure Concept, Ankit Prabhudessai of Architecture + Design Ankit Prabhudessai, Kuldeep Kaur of Serendipity, Khushboo Khandelwal of Design Inc, Neesha Alwani and Shruti Jalan of n+s architects | interior designers and Vibhor Sogani of Sogani by Vibhor Sogani – to give us the lowdown on what they think will trend in 2019.

I predict that homemakers would like to increasingly engage in customisation of their spaces, be it furniture, soft furnishings or wall treatments – as opposed to settling for off-the-shelf, ready solutions. They would like to see their interiors come to life as it would be a reflection of their own evolution as homeowners. Hand-crafted furniture, colours and designs inspired from their own culture and roots, with the unmistakable stamp of their individual personality, will motivate people’s choices. A much higher level of ‘personalisation’ in form and process will hold the key to patrons’ hearts.

Furniture shapes inspired by nature seem to be the trend of the coming season. High-gloss metal accents will break the soft organic look. Luxurious, richer looking fabrics such as velvet and tweed are the front runners. Textures in various forms such as wallpapers, make an appearance along with singular art decor pieces thrown in. Coral is undoubtedly the colour of the year 2019.

Organic shapes in home furnishings will be big, and rounded and curved chairs and sofas will be more popular as compared to sharp-edged designs. It’s all about adding softness and moving away from rigid lines, and at same time adding timeless and classic pieces to your space.

Exterior facades will see the integration of various planters interspersed with a down-to-earth material palette. Open plans, which blur the lines between the exterior and the interior, will take centre stage, helping the user get closer to nature.

Individualism, and an absence of cookie-cutter design, will be big in 2019. There will be a pared-down aesthetic with fewer and more meaningful pieces in the house. Artisanal pieces that have a story and a connection, perhaps picked up during travels or bought with careful consideration for their design aesthetics or provenance will be important. Be it a piece of repurposed furniture with Art Deco details, or mid-century modern pieces reflective of the early modernism that was embraced by architects and artists post-independence – we see these aspects resonating significantly in the design world.

A paradigm shift we envisage for 2019 in design is the re-imagining of living, working, luxury and decor in the context of responsible and holistic design, revival of all things local and a focus on one big design idea for a space.

Functionality will always remain an important factor in design; however, setting the mood for the space is an important feature to consider. Typically, the use of bold colours will be limited to accent pieces or as highlighters. To create the desired ambience, the use of strong colours on walls and ceilings will come into play, creating a bold visual, which then would act as a canvas for furniture, art and accessories to follow.

In the past, the application of lighting and associated technology was limited as compared to its present avatar. Today, lighting effectively acts as the fourth dimension of architecture, and rightly so. The fact is that the impact of this medium can bring about a dramatic change in the quality of architecture and its perception. This realisation and availability of suitable alternatives is leading to a rise in the demand for quality lights, energy-efficient sources and even lighting consultants. A highly positive trend, this demonstrates that the industry is growing; there are new developments every day in terms of materials and technology. Lighting design will slowly and steadily move towards computation and automation, and become interactive and interdisciplinary in its approach. With changes in materials and technology, one must update their methodology and practice. In the era of smart technology, the interactive interface in products is something I’m personally fascinated to explore.
