I am so disappointed to read from you: wood walk ways to be 'painted' There is little I dislike more than painted wood for walk ways or decks! Perhaps it's due to where I live (in the Northwest Territories of Canada) but even in most parts of Canada that I have lived. Painted wood walk ways and decks are 'dangerous' to walk on when cold and/or wet! I would 'never' suggest it.

The first example was just wonderful. I love mosaics and honest materials. On my lot I have a brick walkway to the house from the detached garage ending in a brick patio. I love brick. However the massive oak tree in the yard is starting to heave up a few of the bricks. So although brick would seem to be a lifetime investment things can begin to happen to it. I also have concrete walkways in the yard in a meandering oval. We call it the toddler runway. Children are immediately struck with the possibilities for happy gamboling. I also have gravel in out of the way places.

The suggestion to use mulch to walk on in a residential application astonishes me. It is messy and often has chemicals ( pesticides ) that you may know nothing about. Also it isn't attractive. Not everyone takes their shoes off in the house. Theoretically I am in favor but I am in and out so much as I am retired and garden and walk the dog and have a pool. It is not practical for me to remove my shoes so many times a day. During the worst of the pandemic though I would Windex the bottom of my shoes and dry them off before stepping in the door when I came home from appointments or shopping.

I did not like the staggered or zig zag pathway. While I found the Japanese philosophy informative all I could envision is that with elderly backs and knees all of that change of angles and trajectory in a confined space on a daily basis would propel many of us straight back to physical therapy and knee surgery. The suggestion that it slows you down -while obvious-is not a recommendation for me.

Recently I laid some stones/pavers by a gate that leads into the pool from the front yard. I have friends who come directly in that way.
