It can be fixed just as we fix ply on the ceiling

Since they are 5" wide strips, would they require a ply backing?

Since it is 1'' thick, the material is strong in itself so it should not require ply backing which will add to additional thickness. However, check with the contractor how he would like to fix it on the false ceiling.
